$125 speed fine from froggy cruise

Hi all. I have just returned from Queensland to hear from Jason (Pug505exec) that I have incurred a $125 fine while driving his car @ 105km/h in a 100km/h zone. I have not confirmed this with him but I think this happened while on the froggy cruise.

There are a number of barristers in my family, and i am going to quiz them about the 10% speedo leway regulation and the 3km/h tolerance, and the legality thereof tommorow.

Just thought you guys might be interested to know.

For the record i was leading the cruise when the fine was incurred (if my calculations are correct, ill speak to jason tommorow)

    Ouch.

Wonder where it was. I still have no idea how accurate my speedo is around freeway speeds so I tend to just stick to an indicated 100 where possible.

I've just heard from home that I've also collected a 5km/h over the limit fine on the cruise. Let us know how you go - I plan on writing in to them (gotten away with parking fines with that method), but my protest will probably fall on deaf ears.
Hopefully the fact that my speedo needle flickers within a range of about 8km/h might count for something.

Date of issue on the fine is the 3rd of December, so if you havent got it by now, you should be right

How do you go with telling the police that your car has a defect such as a dodgy (eg. flickering needle) speedo? Is that potentially yellow sticker material? Just wondering...

But it has made me fix my speedo. I took it apart gear by gear, and put it back together. It has stoped wobbling, and is no-longer 10Km overstating

Sorry to hear this guys. That really sux. Please fight this crap before it is nation wide.

I am currently fighting with my insurance company over a speeding ticket which looks like it might affect a claim I am making. I'll explain in a separate thread.

I have no idea - I'm in London until mid-Jan, and I got my mum to open all my mail.
Well, let them send me a few reminder notices, I think it has to be paid up by the end of the year.

Sergetov - no worries, I only got myself and the government to blame. If it wasn't for the convoy, I would probably have been going a fair bit faster. Just tell us how your appeal goes, yeah?
Don't know about legality of speedo wobble, but it's gone through 2 RWC's with it.

One does consider the possibility of bringing along a *cough* radar detector *cough* on the next cruise...

I didn't see anything vaguely suspicious at all, and I usually have a keen eye...

Sorry to hear about all of this, I haven't received anything yet, fingers crossed.

I doubt the police would care about dodgy speedos. A few years back, my dad got booked for doing 67km/h in a 60 zone in the XF Falcon. He swore that he was doing 60 according to his speedo because he SAW the camera up ahead FACING HIM and slowed down to 60.

Anyway, he went and got his speedo checked out by a speedo specialist and found that an incorrect speedo sender was fitted (these Falcons have electronic speedos) that made the speedo read less by about 10-15%. Mind you, the car had passed its RWC a few years ago when we bought it and no one had touched the sender since then.

He got a written statement from the speedo guy and presented it to the police, but they didn't accept it, saying that it was his responsibility in the first place to make sure the car was properly maintained.

We never noticed the speed difference, prior to having the Falcon, we had a slow crappy Datsun van that we always got passed in, so we thought the Falcon's "zippiness" was normal.

So that was that. He had to pay the fine, I doubt things would have changed much since then, if anything I'd expect the police to be more strict towards people having dodgy speedos, especially if you knew that it bounced around and didn't fix it.

I think I'd better go and fix mine then...

Any one remember a Commodore parked near a bridge, I can only recall that it was after Marysville and before we stopped at Eildon, just as we passed a row of trees. I slowed thinking it looked sus, but when I drove past it nothing indicated a speed camera. I think this is our man!

    Sheeeeet.

I also remember slowing down for that white commodore. I spoke to my brother (a policeman) he reckons i should be able to talk my way out of it if i write a letter in (not my car, first offence etc etc), thinks i should just get a caution.

There are no legal loop holes, 10% tolerance is a Vicroads regulation whereas the 3km/h tolerance is a law. It could have been a lot worse, I must confess ive done 180 on that road in the cressida, so i dont think i really have the right to feel hard done by.

Try that in the "new" Australia and I think you will be hung

We as motorists must do something about this BS NOW!! It has already gone way too far. It is not changing the road toll in the slightest.
