Is it really General Chit Chat or not?

    Pug307:
One of the good things about Aussiefrogs is that there isn't a Gestapo like constant deleting and editing of messages unlike on some forums - the moderator presence isn't huge, which is a great thing. There hasn't been a huge need for that. At the same time, I find it sad that some cannot discuss other makes in a mature manner, and that at times there are personal insults thrown about. I agree with what Europa wrote - if you have grievances, post them to the board, instead of being faceless men. Noone ever complained to me for posting the Volvo thread - how on earth can one know the feeling out there if noone gives feedback?
    Cal:
Totally agree. I can't believe people would be so gutless as to run to a moderator and complain about the contents of threads. Hello......if you don't like the thread, who is making you read it? It's like people who complain about TV programs. Turn it off! If you don't want to read a thread on Holden Utes, don't. I certainly didn't open it, as I have no interest. It certainly didn't offend me though. Besides, I'm sure the moderators have better things to do.

Can a compromise be found? What about an Off Topic section? I can understand both sides of this arguement but it seems to me it has been fuelled by "faceless men". Come out and voice you opinions in public.

    Cal.
    I couldn't agree more.

I wish you were here when I was arguing these same points 6 months ago.

This is the only post I'm going to make under this thread, due to the "trouble" I caused last time, but know that I'm here supporting you.

    I will back you up....

I think that General chit chat is "anything", hence the "general". If there is somethihg your not interested in that is posted there dont read it.... it's not that hard. Everyone here is generally quite open minded and it makes for great discussion having the odd non froggy thing talked about... this is a discussion board ins't it??? and a "general" one at that, i believe

    that's my 2c

You've got my support too Dave.

When I was new to Aussiefrogs I tried to sort out what the issue was with SAABs, said that my parents owned one and I thought it was great, excellent performance and equipment, etc. I copped a few flames for even mentioning it. Thing is, just because I can see the virtues in a non-frog, doesn't mean I want one... I would much rather have my Mi16 or even a good 504 or 505, the Peugeots just push the buttons in ways the SAAB doesn't.

I'm a French car fan, but I can see the good points of any car. Aren't we open-minded enough to see the virtues of other makes? Frogs rule, but they aren't the only cars on the road.

    Some wise words spoken!

I could never understand why some couldn't handle the Saab topic in a mature manner, instead there were some behaving like a bunch of brats in the sandpit.

Look at topics like TV channels. If you don't like it - switch channel. I doubt a SAAB topic is like viewing the adult channel.

    Cheers,

I've got to say, I laughed out loud many times when the SAAB topic was going, I might not have agreed with everyone, but it was sure funny watching people get more and more agitated...

I agree. It was pretty silly. I think I was fairly new around here at the time so didn't really participate, but it was amusing. I think the best thing is not to take anything to heart on here.

I agree completely with everything that everyone in this thread has said so far. No one is forcing you to read every thread.

    Might i suggest an election???
Maybe we should have a poll with a time limit and ask if people want to keep "anything about anything" or something more froggy specific. Or perhaps another section?

I have to say, i really enjoy the social aspect of this board, so changing it would be a great shame.

Any reasonably intelligent person would assume general chit chat on a french car site, like this!!! would essentially be about FRENCH MOTORING TOPICS, in the land of AUS as the Title implies.
Instead it appears a few recent blowins want to force changes on a great forum.
    moon moon moon moon
If you want lengthy discussions on any other Marque i sugest going to the appropriate FORUM & converse with other like minded fans.
It really dosen't take a lot of effort to view several forums simultaneously IT'S called WINDOWS just open another FREAKIN WINDOW.

    "freakinfrogs",

Was this insightful post placed as a regular reader? or as a contributor?

The title doesn't just imply, it actually says,

    "General Chit Chat!
Chat about anything related to anything!"

I'm through arguing....I find it sad that this discussion is even taking place.

Let's clarify the offical position and move on.

How about splintering the "General Chit Chat" forum into two separate forums:

"French Cars General": for general car chat with a focus on French cars (i.e. those topics not marque-specific, like those recent air-conditioning threads, C3 vs Clio vs "non-Frog rival #37", etc.)

"The Lounge": for all the totally non-related topics that crop up now and again (e.g. Sydney fires, digital cameras, etc.)

Most forums I frequent do have some sort of "lounge" type area alongside their more "focused" General forum, so that those who want to socialise with other BB folk can do so, without cluttering the other forums with off-topic stuff (which annoys some BB users.)

Recent blowins?!!! If I'm not mistaken, all those which you refer to, are more frequent contributors than yourself, who blew in earlier than you (3rd October 2002).

    C'mon guys settle down,
'tis the season to be jolly clown

There have been some good points made over the last few days, thanks for the positive comments it's what this site is all about, all your thoughts are being taken on board but any changes made will not just be a knee jerk reaction, remember we all have day jobs so it's not always possible to get together behind the scenes and discuss.

It won't happen overnight but it will happen wink

I'd like to know what happens when some correspondents read a book they don't like or see a TV program they don't like, especially if there was say for example a Saab advert featured.....

Seems like the TV repair people would do a roaring trade repairing physical damage to TV's!

I wonder how they also own French cars, which sometimes also require patience and tolerance from their adopted family.....

This is the general section isnt it? Is this the place to discuss turbo's on the Saab 9000CD or the new Saab 95 Talleganda?
Maybe someone and I would enjoy talking about the Niki 650 possibly??
If we really want to start stirring up trouble...
Maybe we should start talking about automatics in the Alfa 164 sedans too.....

Does anyone else feel like this is turning into a Jerry Springer episode, titled "Scandals and generalised Threads, lies revealed"

You know what, keep it how it is, this way some of us have something to giggle over. Whilst we try to pin-point what generalisation is.

I'm actually really impressed with most of the stuff posted on this forum. We have a lot of contributors who know their stuff and have some worthwhile things to say. I'm also impressed with good spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary. Frog drivers must be smart people!!

If you want lengthy discussions on any other Marque i sugest going to the appropriate FORUM & converse with other like minded fans.
What I've seen on other auto forums leaves a lot to be desired. I think we'd struggle to have a good discussion with them.

Point being, Aussiefrogs is a great place to have discussions and debates, whether it's about froggy cars, Holden utes, SAABs or anything else.

    Let it continue.

    Well,

At least someone had the guts to say something. However, there are still some faceless men floating around, it seems. Bear in mind, I don't know how much credence we should pay to someone who puts "stiring" as their interest. Even though this is a "Froggy" forum, I still think we should be able to spell English!

I find it strange that we have a "La Trading Poste", which is as OT as it gets, yet there are some wishing to impose further restrictions on the "General Chit Chat" forum. Bear in mind, these forums and topics create a community here.

In one of my first posts on this topic, I did suggest opening other forums (eg. "The Pub" or thereabouts) if "General Chit Chat" was forced to become "General French Chat" forum, so I haven't only been posting criticism.

    Cheers,
