Greatest Car of All Time?

I'm sure many here will find this an interesting decision. BBC's Top Gear readers voted the Land Rover as the greatest 'car' of all time.

Experts from Top Gear said the Land Rover had all the elements necessary for the award, including function, design, durability, engineering supremacy and soul.

Here is the short list of cars.

Just remember that the poll was pretty much limited to only those in the UK.

Cheers,

They couldn't be serious....have a go at the list & remember that this show has a fairly large viewing audience so naturally, they are going to vote for what they usually drive. Land Rovers have always been to poms what FJs were to Aussies so if you lined up an FJ against some of the others...E type Jags, McLaren F1, Fiat 500 even a DS Citroen and ask people to vote, then guess what they'll go for. The wank tank factor is also like here; edging on plague proportions and again it's a case of fantasies & infatuations rather than just & logical reasons...after all, I doubt anyone could vote for that based on environmental, functional, safety, comfort or reliability grounds, particularly if you've seen the comparison test we have on aussiefrogs on video between Jon Woods mate (Louis Barber) converted 2CV 4WD and the Land Rover discovery.....how embarrassing. http://gibgib.serveftp.com:1970/CitroenMedia/2CV/

Me thinks they like the Peugeot 307 wink
Have a look at the "detailed" (if you can call it that?) info on each car. The car in the background behind the 'vote' text is a 307, and a Vauxhall (Holden) Vectra behind that.

You have to figure out what is the best all round value for money car which has good handling, saftey features, power, etc...

Obviously the McLarenF1 is the ultimate supercar but at over $1.5 Million (Aussie dollars) it's not going to be a contender.

I think, like Alan S said. The poms are voting for their own personal favourtite car and is not based on any logic. Having spent a lot of time in London, I have seen how the poms are very very fond of their Land Rovers, you see them everywhere. Having said that I thoguht every pom would also be in love with their Jags.... especially the e-type.

Oh also, has any1 seen the magazine/newspaper add for the new Porsche Cayanne Turbo? (Thats the new SUV/4WD porsche) it says "If you are wondering why you need 450BHP to drop your children to school... You're thinking too much about it"

Thought it was a cool ad, kinda taking the mickie outa their traget market.

It's a phone poll, so it's hardly scientific and as I mentioned, it was basically only open to Poms (and Scots & Welshmen). One thing I've noticed in politics, is that everytime there's a phone poll of some sort, in the office, there'll be a list of numbers you can ring when bored (didn't one of the workers in a Minister's office get caught out trying to rig a poll by pressing redial

I've noticed that everytime a country does it's "greatest, most popular, [insert positive superlative here]" polls, local products do very well - I think it was an article I read in Autocar that had the results, and the French were certainly very proud of their local product

Its strange how the Poms are so into Land Rovers when I'm sure the government and the powers that be (not the same thing I'm sure) would have sealed all the roads by now. Surely there wouldn't be a lot of 4WD'ing to do? Perhaps they run over a lot of Welshmen?

Any poll that could put a landrover, an e-type jag and a mustang in front of a DS clearly was targetted at 70 year old English hat wearing men in a week when the Bedford or Thames Viagra delivery van had broken down (probably most weeks really?).

Cheers
