FAO Macintosh people

Some of you might be interested in this image, which was on the Apple Store for a few minutes before it got promptly shut down for "maintenance":

If this is down to webmaster incompetence and not the result of the server being hacked and a hoax graphic put up, I guess that's what they will be announcing at the Developer Conference on Monday..

Someone at Apple is going to get SO fired over this

Yay!

Finally.....optical audio in and out. I know you have been able to get 3rd party tools for this for ages but it is great if it becomes mainstream,

I'm pretty keen on checking out the new 15" powerbook, I might be interested in replacing the POS TiBook I have had to put up with for nearly 3 years.

Either that......or those 12" Powerbooks with a superdrive for a little over 3K are very very tempting wink

I've bought stuff from this company before - they are really good - the owner's very friendly and helpful on the phone too!

The 12"'s are very , very nice, and that's a very good price (I bought my Combo drive version for $3895 a couple of months back). Great for watching DVD's on aeroplanes too! (Just back from a quick trip to Townsville and Charters towers)

I'm a bit suspicious of super low prices on some of the G4 PB's though. there have ebeen a few scams out there involving macs over the net recently. Still , if people here have bought from them without problems I guess its legit.

On the "leaked specs" story, I thought that Apple were going to bypass the Motorola G5 and go straight to the IBM PowerPC970 though?

No dount http://www.macrumors.com will keep us informed

Cheers

Rod,
Given the prices are so good I'd be suspicious too, but given I've dealt with this company before I could only recommend them.

Hi guys.

I went to the Apple Final Cut Pro Expo at Star City Casino tonight with member MY 4. I wasn't particularly interested in the software, although I was stunned to discover that movies such as Lord of the Rings were completely edited, composited and 'effected' (well, had digital effects done to it!) on Power Mac G4's with Final Cut Pro. The new Holden Statesman and Monaro ad (in the Sydney CBD) are FCP creations as well. The raw footage for that Monaro ad is FULL of people, busses, other cars, you name it. All removed

But- the best part of it was, after the show (done in complete Steve Jobs style) was they opened the doors out onto the balcony over looking the Pyrmont Bridge and out towards the harbour - and began pouring the drinks and dishing out the food! Roast beef, lamb and ham, singapore noodles, fish and chips, you name it cheers!

So, if there's an Apple show in your part of the country, go to it, even if you're not particularly interested in the software or hardware on offer!

Ummm, can someone tell me what a superdrive is? I am assuming it is some kind of multi format cd/dvd/etc drive?

Hmm, macs are a little overrated for general stuff, great for design work, and ability to process graphics, but no more reliable than a well maintained PC for day to day stuff. And whenever something stuffs up, they always seem to need reinstalling the OS... oh, and that swapping between OS's really sh*ts me.

I've found the Macs at work to be fairly reliable. I run 8 applications simultaneously and it seems to behave. I just get the impression if I did so on an equivalent PC it wouldn't be so reliable. Not a fancy machine, just a G4 350/400 with 128mb ram.

But then there are some which really struggle running so many apps at the same time.

One thing annoying about Macs - why on earth isn't there an "END" key. There's "HOME", but sometimes you just want to get to the end of the line, but there's no button for that (well, I haven't discovered one yet )

Cheers,

Justin

nchandler,

You're right - a Superdrive is a combined CD-ROM/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R drive.

I think people buy Mac's just because they're different. That was the only reason I did *shrugs* I could use anything, but for the price this machine was, and the fact that it included a 17" LCD and DVD burner at the price-point I was looking at made it attractive.

I've never had any issues. I only use OS X. I've never had OS 9 installed and never used it. I think the only reason people switch between OS's is to use Quark (or some other big design app only in OS 9?) but I know Quark is now available on OS X.
