    Calling our NZ Folk

    Hi Guys,

I'm off to NZ for a week and a bit next week on business, staying in Wellington and working out at Petone. Managed to secure myself a Mondeo for the week (just hope it is and not a Toyota) so am curious as to what roads you'd recommend in that part of the world?

I know the South Island very well, but haven't been around the North Island at all. I was thinking of going around to Taranaki as that looks like an awesome part of the island and not that far from Wellington.

    Anywhere else?

    Cheers,

    Lincoln

How far do you want to travel?

The road from Wanganui to Raetihi is awesome (in a Peugeot ) if you can live with the 2 hours + of flat, straight and boring to get to the start point.

Nearer by, you could take S.H.2 from Petone, over the Rimutakas, to Masterton, and then head out to the Wairarapa coast from there. The Masterton-Castlepoint road is great fun in a good car. And the drive over the Rimutakas is always a challenge

I'll see if I can think of anywhere else!

    cheers
    Mark

Did you want me to pick something up for you?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'd guess the roads around Taranaki aren't too exciting, but the view sounds sensational.

I'd love a Frenchie, but Hertz don't have them. I'll see if they have a manual Focus, as that would be fun, I think. Otherwise the Mondeo is a nice car to drive.

It might be a bit hard to fit a R21 Turbo motor in your suitcase.

And Haakon wants a whole wrecking yard relocated here. roll_lau roll_lau whip

We have to use Hertz at IBM, and they're owned by Ford. We get discounts with Budget, but I don't like them, even if they rent out Renaults.

Budget don't have Renaults in NZ anyway. I think a Mondeo is as good as you're going to get as a mainstream rental here.

If you want some interesting roads, cross over the rimutakas as suggested above, then turn at Featherston to go to Martinborough, lunch at the hotel, then maybe some wine tasting, then take any of the backroads to Greytown/Carterton/Masterton and then a straight forward run to Wellington.

The run to Taranaki from Wellington is on a boring road that has way too much traffic, Tarankai is great once you get there, especially around the mountain, but you can find good roads closer to Wellington.

Another alternative is to go Wellington, Masterton, Woodville, Palmerston North Wellington, some of the back roads are excellent.
