Wishes to Possum and family

I would like to send my wishes to Possum Bourne and family. I was horified when I heard the news about his accident. Possum is a brilliant driver and a great personality for Rallying.

To make matters worse, it happened during travel between stages in a Subie Forester, not his WRC car and at about 60km/h. Just goes to show that no matter how close to the edge these guys live, you can never be prepared for life's unknowns.

I'm sure everyone feels compassion for those who get into this kind of situation... a tragedy for Bourne and his family, a tragedy also for the occupants of the other car.

Let's all hope it works out for them...

Have been driving about in a 03' Forester lately - they dont feel too strong. Sucky thing to happen to a great sportsman, just when he was about to take on WRC and show them how its done in Oz/NZ.

Plenty has been said about Bourne's side of this accident, but what was the entire story if it wasn't speed related and what happened to the other occupants involved in both vehicles?

from what i have heard the driver of the other car had a broken leg or something along those lines and is ok and the other passengers had minor injuries
possum was the worst affected and had to have an induced coma
i just hope that everyone recovers
no one likes to see anyone injured especially in a car accident
we have lost too many motoring people this year already
cato - 500cc bike rider
sheen - 500cc champion and all round nice bloke
we don't need anymore
we all know that racing is a dangerous sport but possum wasn't even racing he was just driving along a dirt road checking the road for the event he was going to go in

Crap, did Cato not make it? Last I heard he was in critical condition after hitting a concrete wall when a carbon brake disc shattered on him.

Its causing a bit of controversy in 500cc circles, with the bikes having outgrown the tracks. I imagine some work will be done on tracks now to deal with the insane speed these buggers are doing. I read in Oz motercycle news that the best theory is a carbon fibre brake shattered, the other is that he clipped another rider which jammed his brake lever hard on.
Another nice bloke. Why is it that the pricks of the world live longest?

Possum Bourne update – Tuesday

Issued at 1335 AEST, Tuesday 22 April, 2003: Medical staff at Dunedin General Hospital, New Zealand, remain comfortable that Subaru Rally Team Australia driver Possum Bourne’s condition is where they would expect it to be at this stage of his treatment.

However, his condition does remain serious but stable and he will continue to remain in a drug induced coma.

Possum’s sister, Kristine Game, said: "No-one should underestimate the challenge Possum faces, but he is fighting as hard as those that know him would expect him to. We are blown away by the level of support, and so will Possum be when he sees the response he has created, which is staggering.

"We are a strong family and we are going okay. It’s tough but we’re hanging in there and the extended family we have in the rally fraternity is also helping us greatly."

Messages can be left at the website www.possumpwrc.co.nz on the message board, or faxed to New Zealand 09 238 5737. (From Australia: 0011 64 9 238 5737).

The accident occurred near Queenstown, on New Zealand’s south island.

The posts on the Possum's website are now up to 2700, i think it was around 500 before the crash. Just shows how much we love Possum.

Here's s definition I found in a Kiwi car mag awhile back:

Australia (n): Large red piece of dirt currently owned by Possum Bourne.

I hope to see you back on a stage again mate.

Izza, he certainly has a strong support-base and for good reason. As others that have met him will attest to, he is so unbelievably approachable, down to earth and inspirational.

I last saw him when he spoke to us at a WRX club meeting in Perth a couple of weeks back with Cody and Dean. Like many others, I was really shocked when I saw the news whilst browsing a few rally websites. It does remind us how fragile life can be..

I have checked as much as I can find, and the latest seems to be Foxsports. It states:

Bourne's survival chances fade, life support reduced

Associated Press
Apr. 28, 2003 6:39 p.m.
DUNEDIN, New Zealand (AP)ó
Critically injured world rally driver Possum Bourne had his life support decreased Monday and the head of Bourne's racing team said the driver's chances of survival were "virtually nil."
Friends and family of Bourne, injured in a car crash on April 18, were keeping a 24-hour vigil after it was decided to gradually decrease the use of machines that were assisting his breathing and other life support.
Strangely enough his website is down at present - maybe it is overloaded?

Although it does not sound very good, it does not state he has died. Of course it would be unfortunate if he does - he is one of racing's gentlemen.

Unfortunately the news is confirmed. The family decided to turn off his life support today. Like others who met and knew him, this is a very sad day for motorsport and for his young family.

I'm sure he's now somewhere driving a WRX in the sky with ROJ

Condolences and best wishes

Update 29/4/03

Possum Bourne's total life support has been reduced, not turned off, so he is still hanging in
It appears his brain injury is much more serious than first believed, and most recent scans have shown he is unlikely to recover with full faculties. That's why his full life support has been reduced. He needs a miracle now to regain a life worth living for one who lived life to the max.
Bourne is an icon in NZ, up there with Peter Blake, Ed Hillary and Peter Snell. Yet he has always been so very approachable to the ordinary guy, the media and to non motorsport people coz of the fine way he has conducted himself. Every sports loving person over here (and probably in OZ too) will mourn if he passes away.
Pray for a miracle guys and girls.

Cheers and love to his wife and children.

Possum Bourne Update - Monday

Issued at 1800 AEST, Monday 28 April, 2003: The following statement regarding the condition of Subaru Rally Team Australia driver Possum Bourne, was issued this evening by his family in consultation with Dunedin Hospital:

Possum suffered a severe brain injury at the initial incident on Friday 18 April and has been managed very actively until now.

The extent and severity of the injury was not fully apparent until the weekend just gone, when ventilation support was decreased but he deteriorated and had to go back onto full support.

Evaluation today, including a brain scan, confirms the original injury was very severe and continuing full support is no longer in Possum's best interests.

*********

The family have made the right decision, even a miracle could possibly mean a life on a respirator - and trust me this is no way to live, not for a man who lived life to the max.

May we pray for a quick resolution so that the family (NZ nation) can at least know he's in a better place.

I hate to admit it but it's prolly the best thing by now. I he hasnt improved by now, chances are he isnt going to.
I cried when I heard the news. He is my favourite sports person and my biggest hero and role model.

I made up this picture as a background for my computer. It's made up of pics I've taken of Possum (except the pics of him personally)
Your more than welcome to it to remember Possum by.

A dedicated professional, and an inspiration to all in motorsport. Possum will be conspicious in his absence, RALLYING will never be quite the same again. Heart felt condolences to all his family and those who knew him personally.
