    Need web hosting

Tonight at around 8:30 to 9:30 the site was as slow as a deux chevaux (with one lead off a plug)...

Is anyone aware of a hosting company that can satisfy the following requirements?

    Australian based server!
150 or so Megabytes of server space
    CGI-BIN
Domain name pointing with ONE OFF Charge for 3 names (so far).
High bandwidth allowance (being optimistic )

That's all I can think of that is currently required to run this site & my business one.
Please contact me if you can assist.

    Hi gibgib,

    I use WebCentral - www.webcentral.com.au
They're located in Brisbane and run 100mBit links to Connect and Telstra which makes them fast for all ISP users. I've got two domain names and they charge I think $100/yr for each extra one.

If it means anything to you, support is second to none - it's 24hrs 7 days a week.

You'd be looking at the same plan as me, the Enterprise Plan for $77/mth http://www.webcentral.com.au/prices.htm#merchant

I don't know if that's expensive compared to what you spend, but we run an online store from it so the cost is reasonable I think.

If you want to judge the speed of my site: http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au

    Man that is fast.
It's a little expensive when compared with what we have now.
I can arrange a deal with Westhost to go cheaper if I pay a year in advance. The only reason I haven't done it is because if the slow access problems.

I know your rock on Woodville Rd. I was working across the road (next to the abondoned shop) a couple of weeks ago.

    Andreas,
Westhost have been very good apart from the slow access problem. It surely does say unlimited bandwidth in their clauses.

DCSI have offered hosting for aussiefrogs & we are just in the process of seeing if it's feasible or not. http://www.dcsi.net.au/

    gibgib,

I know it isn't cheap. I think if we pay for 10 months we get 12 months access (so $770 for the year) but I'm not too sure.

I'm actually just about to set up an ultimate bulletin board for tech support and advice so I'll let you know when it's going and you can judge the speed.

I was on the phone to them last night at 11pm getting the cgi stuff sorted.

If you were opposite did you see either dad's XM or my 306 in the street?

It is expensive but what you have is fast so that justifies it.

I didn't see any French frogs on the street. I went past today & took a geezer in there & couldn't see either frog
Then I was going fast along Woodville Rd

    gibgib,

Well mine wasn't there today I was at uni! Dad's was though.

I'm having a bit of trouble with WebCentral. Last night it was all fine and dandy, but today they changed their mine and said they can't map .cgi files to the cgi-bin directory? Now this doesn't mean a huge amount to me but isn't that what the cgi directory is for? They know I'm not happy, because I've bought UBB now.

In the mean time I've discovered a cheapy that seems pretty decent - www.netfirms.com Free with a 1GB limit, US$5 a month for a 2GB transfer limit! $10 for more... I've set up the demo UBB on there and it seems reasonably quick.

Wow that netfirm thing seems incredible.

I am not sure if I trust it... free this free that
There'd have to be ads popping up on the site

cgi-bin is very neccessary for UBB as you know. Some servers do not offer this. A lot are asp now.

    gibgib,

I have used netfirms for a softball site (dodgy, don't know why it's still up but you get that) for over a year and never had any problems I know of. They host the domain for free too.

You can have a look/see at the demo board I put up there http://www.killarasoftball.asn.au/cg...ultimatebb.cgi

Seems quick enough (on Telstra Cable anyway)

    gibgib,

Just thought I'd let you know Webcentral have said definately no to using UBB because of the stress it places on their shared servers.

Unforunately I'd already bought it. Webcentral recommended Snitz Forums, which is free, and just uses a Microsoft Access Database.

It is so similar to UBB it's amazing. Have a look at http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au/forum

    Hi Derek,

That forum is very similar to UBB.
Makes me wonder why we paid for it?
The guy who upgraded this board would give me a long list of reasons why UBB is better I'd imagine.

So you paid for a license for nothing..US$250?
What will you do with it?

    Well, UBBhad a special, US$125 (AU$253.50)

What will I do with it? I don't know. Does anyone want an Ultimate Bulletin Board licence for up a company of up to 5 employees? I am disappointed WebCentral told me I COULD use UBB but later backed down.

I can't see any huge differences between them. One thing, I didn't like UBB's Admin menus you hover over to make them pop up. This has a simpler system.

It's easy for me to back this up too. One MS Access .mdb file!

There's a new version coming out soon apparently, we'll see how it goes. http://forum.snitz.com
