    Trouble Peugeot 306 1.6

    Hi all,

I have been charged by the police and have a court hearing
regarding a crash i had earlier on this year. The reason for the
crash was that my Peugeot 306 1.6 Virant engine cut out while
driving and somehow i lost control of the car as my power steering
was stiff (no pun please) :-) and therefore i hit a tree. There was
a lot of damage on the driver side so the fire services had to cut
part of the car just to get me out (how embbrassing). At the moment
i want to gather some information (proof) to u guys that if u have
had similar situation with their pug 306 whether the car is new or
old. I have got myself a solictor and i want to present him with
information that it is not a one off thing in my car and that is
may have happen to other peoples cars as well.

The history of my car was that i bought it from new 'R' reg and the
first month of driving the engine cut out while changing down in to
3rd gear, boy was i scared!!!. i took it to the dealer , he said it
could be a software problem in the chip of the gear , he said it
was fixed , but a couple of months later it happened
    again!!!...this happened 5th time but by the 6th time i wasn't that
lucky as i crashed the car and its been written off. :-(

I would like to hear from u guys please so i can pass this on to my
    solictors.

Like i said, i am going to court and fight my case , i could pled
guilty as the police said i could have been speeding (yeah right!)
or pled not guilty with some proof.

    Cheers all,

    Hi,

Just some local info -- we never got a 306 with a 1.6 litre engine here in Australia, just various forms of the 1.8 and 2.0 petrol, and 1.9 and 2.0CDi turbodiesel engines.

I would guess the UK gearboxes would have been similar/the same as the ones we got here though? Model/type numbers of your engine and gearbox would likely be a help in collecting relevant info, both locally and internationally.

I thought they had the 8-valve 1.8 litre engine.

i don't know if this is going to be of any help to you at all but in the Mi16 that i used to own every now and then after driving down a freeway and coming up to the lights at the end of it i would change down a gear as i was slowing down and the engine sometimes stopped
i traced it back to a faulty connection on one of the relays under the bonnet
the same thing happened once in my GTi6
after learning what had happened in the Mi16 i was quickly on to the problem.
i think i was shear co-incidence that this happened after a trip down the freeway
i can't see this bieng a fault or something that happens all the time in pugs as it can happen in just about any car i feel.
mind you i had a 604 that did the same thing on the odd occasion again after a run down the freeway
just goes to show that pugs hate freeways and prefer a more challenging road

Yeah, my S16 does it occasionally. I thought it might have been a faulty idle controller. What is this relay you are talking about pugrambo?

How is the power steering driven? if its off the engine ? if it is the power steering would still be active providing the engine is still turning (ie: you didnt dip the clutch whilst rolling ) but if is electric like my astra td van when the engine blew up its not a lot of fun to stop it as everything electric went dead, luckily i had a stright road to stop it on it is possible that you paniced and dipped the clutch hench your loss of steering (and if you pumped them your brakes) good luck i know that theres a tiny difference between a vauxhall and a peugeot but just thought it might help

    Keep it shiney sideup

not sure on where your relays are in your car but in my Mi16 they were under the bonnet and the ine that caused trouble was an orange coloured one
in my GTi6 they are all under the dash on the drivers side and not knowing which one exactly was causing the trouble i pulled each one out and made sure the terminals were all clean and then put them all back in place making sure that they were seated properly
i did find one that had a bit of crap on the terminals and since doing this the engine has never cut out since
in the Mi16 which i imagine but i could be wrong would be similar to the S16 the relay would be under the bonnet towards the front of the engine bay on the drivers side
after i did the same thing in the Mi16 i never had the trouble in that car again either
a mate of mine had a similar thing on his 851 ducati and with the vibrations on that bike he actually had to cable tie the relay in place so that it wouldn't fall out
it was his troubles that i looked in my car for a similar problem
hope this helps in some way
