    New Peugeot by BMW...

Is it just me or are car designers now copying Peugeot designs. Case in point: The new 5-series. Notice the lights...

I didn't notice when I first saw it, but now that you mention it, yes there are similarities. However, there are only so many possible designs surely, I don't think you can be too critical . I'm also not entirely convinced by the front lights being that similar to peugeot.

It's just you Bill. That BMW is too bloody ugly even for a new Peugeot.

wow...what a MESS...makes the new 7 series look spectacular...that really is not nice at all...front lights look like a cross between the new sylvia and the is200, bumper and grill looks like it was designed by the team at daewoo, side has clues of passat/audi/alfa ughhh, rear looks like what happens when a 7 series shags an impreza;and then there are those commodore style reflectors in the bumper bar.....somebody at bmw has been drinking 2 much saki....ughhh

    cheers

Actually I think it looks better than a 7... the proportions and surface shapes aren't too bad (unlike the 7), it's the detailing that ruins it.

    GO GO CHRIS BANGLE

    God that thing looks awful.

A fly on the wall at BMW HQ at Munich told me:

"Ja, Herr Bangle, vot have you in store for us mit ze new 5-series"

"Well, I think I'd copy the side profile of the new Audi A4 .. then tack on one of those hunchback boots that are such a big hit on the 7-series (well my mum said they were cool last time I called.) Then to top it off, I'm going to make a monumental balls-up the front grille and light assembly the way only I know how."

"Ah, Herr Bangle, ze brilliance never seems to fade! Now I just have to send my CV to Mercedes and Audi, to get off zis sinking ship"

Maybe it's another BMW group April fools day joke....

I think that Mr Bangle could write a book on car design: "The ABC of how to completely screw up good looking cars"

I think the BMW beancounters might soon be applying some "flame surfacing" to Mr Bangles arse. eek!

Ironically, the official photos make the car look far worse than some of the spy shots I've seen

it's looks pretty darn ugly in those pics. I'll wait to see it in the flesh though. The Z4 looked pretty ugly in the pics, but when I saw it in the flesh I really like it. Some of the lines are just sensational on it.

The sloans and yuppies 'll love it. The term 'BMW' instantly gives rose coloured glasses to many people, but God only knows why. As for copying the French, well just about every car maker attempts to do that, although I think it's an insult to Peugeot to suggest that the new 5-series is a Pug copy.

What do you think about these spy shots of the 407?

    That 407 looks fantastic.

It looks purposeful, but classy at the same time.

frontal profile: a mazda 6/toyota paseo lovechild?

rearward profile: looks as if eberybudy's doin an audi.

but now, im just another wannabe design commentator blush

nonetheless, it looks agressively elegant... and retains the family face.

much better than the beemer...like yelo say,...very purposefull and classy although i just loved the lights on the previous model, they looked more agressive and potent...love the new airdam on the new model which would look just as phenomenal on the little is200....only dissapointment are the "all audi" rear lights and the way the corner meets the side of the body (still looks good though); i dont like the 307 treatment, how the guards meet (or better still DONT) the front windscreen pillar....

    cheers

There's a bit of Porsche Cayenne in that air damn, but I think the front is pretty well executed. It has the same fussy A pillar/mirror that the 307 has that doesn'tsit too well with me, but the more I look at that section of design, there are very few cars that manage to get this area right. Eg, C3 looks great, but the mirror area is a bit fussy, so perhaps it's just not possible.

The rear is a bit too bland for my liking, and a bit Astra-esque in it's bootline. I would've liked to have seen some nicer rear lights. The 307 CC got some decent ones, so why go bland on the 407?

yeah echo those thoughts on the the bimmer. the bulky rear seems more like the rear of the 535 of the early 90's.... as for the nose, well it can join the ranks of the new 7 series - sad!

the 407 looks great from the front, but not sure about the rear ... a little to audi-esque. question

Is it just me, or do the headlights on the beemer resemble the way eyes are painted on those ancient Egyptian murals found in tombs??

Trying to appeal to the Egyptians perhaps? roll_lau

And yeah, I do think the car's damn ugly. mallet

That's gotta be a joke doesn't it. It's a photoshop effort to some degree, as the pic just doesn't look 'right' . Whatever it is it is hideous. Truly disastrous. I call it a win for Peugeot and Alfa if it's for real.

The front looks like Kenneth Williams from the 'carry-on' movies. All nostrils.
