    Icon6 Wheel Balancing - ACT

Hey folks - bit of a heads up for you all.

Had my GTi180 in at Dealer "A" last week for it's 20K kms service. I asked them to take off the front tyres and swap them to the opposing rims in order to even up the "outside edge" wear (P7000's are directional) and then balance. They outsourced this job to a local, and well known tyre centre just down the road. This well known tyre centre completed the tyre swap on the rims but either, did not bother to balance or failed to mention to Dealer "A" that they could not complete the wheel balance also due to the fact the GTi180 rims (and others) do not have a centre hole on the rim.

On picking up the car - nothing was mentioned to me by Dealer "A" and I thought all was well. Driving home that same day, I noticed from 85Km/h+, something was different but as the suspension is so rigid in the 180's, I was not sure it was due to an improper balance.

Being the proactive consumer that I am (FIGJAM ), I visited the tyre centre just this morning to rectify the problem. After they had the car up on the hoist and the rims off, they kindly advised they could not complete the balance and to look for a service provider who can do "on car balancing" (not a balancing act!). I did speak to Capital Steering in Fyshwick who could do the job but advised against on car balancing for the 'drive' wheels due to the fact they could damage the differential. I really did appreciate their honest approach there and it saved me an unnessecary trip to them unlike this morning. (Thumbs up to yet another STUART in Canberra!)

I put this all back on Dealer "A" to FIX THE PROBLEM and to ring around for me as I paid the Dealer for this service and it clearly was not completed 100%

Basically, I beat them at their own game and found someone who could do it first thing on Monday morning. I am going to "Discount Tyre Service" in Braddon who have the capability/adaptor to balance rims without this centre hole. On calling Dealer "A", they were a bit surprised but thankful all the same.

So Sunday, I will throw the 180 up on the jack/stands and take the rims off and drive the brother-in-law's 350K kms old Apollo for the day!! Scary stuff!

A BIG SHOUT OUT to ACT180/SILVER_GTi-6/[email protected] for all your help this morning on email boys. This is what we are here for.

    Cheers y'all

I just can't believe that dealer "A" didn't know that the tyre place they use can't do balancing for these rims! Pretty poor stuff IMO!

Will dealer "A" be picking up the bill for it? Not to mention the hassle of having to get it done somewhere else and being without the car for the day?

A herd of pigs have just taken off from Canberra Airport...........

No, in all seriousness, they are 'open' to the idea for a refund to me if the "well known tyre specialist" overcharged me last week. That I say has got them back in my good books.........

Again, a BIG THANKS to Discount Tyre Service in Braddon who did a great job with the rims. It gave me a good chance to clean the rims on the inside anyway!!

All old weights were removed and they fitted them very well without damage/marking the rims.

    A big thumbs up!

    UPDATE;

I whole heartedly retract this statement on DTS @ Braddon. Turns out, as soon as I hit 110-115kmh (first opportunity) on a holiday trip over Xmas, the wheels were just as bad and I was forced to drive at 100kmh over a period of 1150kms. Not that it is a bad thing to be under the limit @ Double Demerits time!!

In the end, I have got the blame from DTS that my rims are the problem as they may not have been able to centre them properly on their machine.

I have re-visited the problem and the solution was "Woden Tyre and Exhaust". Speak to Grant - he was excellent and actually listened to what I had to say and what I was after. They even came in the car with me after they balanced the wheel to make sure I was happy. AND, this was $13 cheaper than the previous attempt to balance the wheels.

BTW - Dealer "A" has still not come to the party with a solution nor refund for the initial cost.

Unfortuantly the 180 rims require an on car wheel balancer or finger space adapter on a independent wheel balancer. One thing I have noticed is if the 180 rims are more then 5-10 grams out you get shutter at 110km/h + speeds.

Another thing to look out for is if balancing weights fall off, that happened to my front right rim, gave me shutter at 110km/h

I had my 180 rims rotated and balanced at bob jane in sydney (tempe to be exact) cost me $40 pretty happy with the job, no shutter at higher speeds.

    Thanks Doc!

No wonder my rims we out! They were out by 30g + on each side!

This is awesome news. So, did BJT in Tempe use the "on car" balancer? I had many people, inc dealer, state that it was not advisable to conduct a on car balance on the front due to it being a FWD. Since that time I have had agreements and also shrugs from many tyre retailers/suspension specialists.

Phil Youl in Sydney used to run "Safer Steering" in Crows Nest. Unfortunately, he decided to sell his business on. He is "MR SUSPENSION" and now operates for his best patrons out of his home on the Nthn Beaches of Sydney. I still (after 7 years!) have his phone number so will give him a call this week and have a chat. Lets just say that Phil would be the Suspension equivalent of Paul Vasallo @ Gladesville.

    Cheers!

No, they had a finger prong adapter on there wheel balancer. That particular BJT does alot of renaults, audis and pugs

True, your likely to get a less accurate balance on a FWD with on car wheel balancing. Secondly on car wheel balancing is usually reserved for track cars and trucks.

i had the GTi-6 on car wheel balanced once

they did a good job on it but i had to stop the bloke when he was doing it as one of the weights went flying straight off the wheel and shot out across the road at a great rate of knots and i was worried that this bloke was either a) going to kill someone or b) damage the car

the manager then begrudgingly got someone else to finish the job and not so kindly asked me to go and find something else to do until they finished the job to which i refused to do

ever since then i have only ever had the wheels done off the car at another place in Dubbo as no one local here will do the wheels
