Hello there (should I say salut ?...)
I'm a french journalist working for TF1 TV channel in Paris (number 1 channel in Europe). I'm working for a program called Auto-Moto which is the oldest and more popular weekly car show in France. I'm in charge of a report about life along the roads all over the world. In that purpose, I'll be in Australia the first 15 days of march 2006, in order to meet many people dedicated to cars (each of them in a different way) from Sydney up to Cairns. I already have some infos and contacts about some people I want to meet. But I'd be grateful if you could help me meet people and/or attend one or more special events dedicated to french cars lovers. Hope to hear from you soon. Take care.
    Stephane Cohen

    His email is: [email protected]

    Bonjour
On m'a
reportage. Merci d'avance pour votre réponse. A très vite.

As the French portion of his e-mail is a tiny bit different, here's my quick translation of the French bit:

    Hi there,

I do not know if I am addressing a computer or a person. But if it is the latter, I will rewrite what I already said in two mails addressed yesterday in bad English and this morning in badly phrased French.

I am a journalist from TF1, specializing in cars. I work on Auto-Moto which is a Sunday institution for over 30 years, accessible on the net at http://tf1.net

I really like to count the beautiful roads of the world. My first stage will be in Australia between Sydney and Cairns, during the first fortnight of March 2006. With few contacts already, I wish to research people impassioned by their cars, those which have stories to tell, which are collectors, unique individuals (I think he means personalities - ajv).

I think your users would be very interested in this proposal, and would like it if you could propose it to them.

Thanks in advance for your swift response. (Yes, I know it is says "with great speed", but you know what I mean - ajv)
    Stéphane Cohen
So, do they want people who can speak French passably well, or will the interviews be in English? It's a shame I'm not on his holiday path, it'd be fun to be on French TV.

My take on this is that he will speak English well enough to pose the questions, your replies will be in English (of course) and it would have a voice-over translation when it went to air.

Pity about the timing, the best gatherings are Easter and Bastille Day. anyone know of any events, frogmobile or other, at that time?

Well done in the translation Andrew.
"Singulieres"= not run of the mill.

He doesn't mention language anywhere apart from bad English and half awake French in his own e mails which Gibgib forwarded.
I'd assume English would be fine, otherwise this would narrow his options incredibly.
He does say at the end that he thinks people with a passion for French cars would not be in short supply on/sur "votre site" (your site). These French car lovers on the other side of the world would make his report very interesting.
Bummer he's constrained himself to the Sydney-Cairns route although, put in perpective, this is twice the distance from the north to south of France.

2cv's, I would've bought one years ago. Their simplicity should make them the cheap car they were designed as. Unfortunately the well to do Yuppies here in Sth Yarra seem to think they're worth $12 to $14 grand judging by the ads I've seen.
They've lost their roots and have grown into a fashion statement being fertilized by folk that know nothing about them. Bummer!
Nevertheless, I love the little darlings.

    That's the Citroen Intelligence Association

Actually Mrs UFO is the CCC of NSW Magazine editor, and her reliable subby does the classifieds. Carol had emailed us to advise the 2CV had been sold.

    Mystery solved.

    Enjoy the car.

I took the liberty of sending this guy a link to this thread, so he could see that his request had been posted, and also see how un-seriously everyone seems to be taking it.

I daresay that this list is uniquely positioned, and he has done the right thing in approaching it.

Put it this way. If I were in the reverse position, of going to the other side of the world to do such a doco, I would appreciate not only being taken seriously but receiving as much help, advice and positive input as I could get, from the very group I contacted.

Whose not taking Stephane seriously? I'm sure UFO as the CCC of NSW President will organize some event with Stephane to represent all Citroen owner's in NSW.

Maybe a show of force of Citroen owners or something? I reckon the French would be quite surprised to see so many Citroen enthusiasts all the way in Australia

I asked one of my French friends and he said Auto-Moto is a highly regarded show in France and is on every Sunday morning at 10:00AM. So it's quite important to take Stephane seriously, as this is a representation of the French car enthusiasts in Australia.

...and part of being a french car owner down under, is not taking ourselves too seriously (uniquely australian?) It's a shame he's not comming further south, because It would be great for him to meet the merry band of fuegoites and 16's...and the gordinis for that matter that melbourne has to offer

I would love to join in & even do a trip to Sydney if time and money permitts...but at the moment, I suspect I will be in tassie at the time

I'd say that a large majority of nationalities could appreciate the humour , the fact the thread even started has to show interest and the amount of members on the list would indicate the potential of such a trip , I am sure his mail is not in vain and most here would jump at the chance should his trips path come into thier area .

Yes, I have something in the brewing and have already heard back from Stephane (who is on hols at present). Thanks for the support Shane.

It is interesting though that the Aussie attitude towards ourselves and life is not always understood outside Australia or New Zealand. I have to be very careful with colloquialisms and facial expressions when talking to people in France. After they get to understand our way of life there is a better understanding. But hey, it's differences that make us all interesting.

indeed , especially so in the written context , we tend to expect others (even the english) to appreciate our slang and *how* we convey a statement, which may be completely different to how it is enterupted at the other end usually in the literal sense .
