    Default Airbus A380

Just arrived back from Tullamarine, where the A380 landed. The thing is massive, incredible. It was also a lot quieter than all the other aircraft that landed (B727/757/etc).

If any of you are interested in aircraft, I recommend you head out to Tullamarine today or tomorrow morning before it departs at 09:00, it's an incredible piece of engineering.

Feline, aaaghhh - the joys of working for QANTAS.........headed to the Jetbase this morning and one of my clients is AIRBUS. They have a "resident" office in Sydney which saves us having to call AIRBUS HQ (France) all the time for questions etc.

Got to the Jetbase this morning and there she was. Almost as tall as those old buildings you drive past on Qantas Drive just near the entrance to the Jetbase. She dwarfed the 747's in the hangers, their vertical stabilisers are like a small yacht sail in comparison. No staff were allowed on today and as I was in Canberra for the weekend, I missed the chance to jump on board from 3pm yesterday!

11am this morning she departed and just to see it get pulled along the tarmac was amazing. I have always looked at a 747 in amazement to see it flying and then they come out with this big bugger!!! Holy geezus......

So quiet like you say - even the APU was very quiet!!!

So off she flew to Tullamarine and then will be back to Brisvegas soon to remove the Qantas banner from the fuselage.

    What a life they lead...........

I'll be flying to the states L.A next year, do you know if QANTAS will be using their new A380 for that route?

QF won't be getting theirs until 2007 now - Airbus will be paying customers compensation for delays with the A380.

Just saw it take-off at Tullamarine, as it heads up to Brisbane now. It immediately followed the take-off of a A340, and it took off in about 2 thirds of the distance. Everyone was surprised at how short the taking off distance was.

It's an amazing sight to see that massive thing take to the air. I'll hopefully post some pictures and videos soon.

    I wouldn't be surprised.

    1. The A380 doesn't have to fly that far - just two odd hours to BNE.
    2. The A340 (-200/300) basically has the longest takeoff run of any currently produced airliner, and I'm sure it'd be flying a far longer segment than the 380. In addition, it'd be using derated thrust, whereas I wouldn't be surprised if they opened it up a little more with the 380 (hey, it's only a developmental aircraft).

    3. It has next to no one on it.

    4. It doesn't have pathetic little 737 engines on it.

They had it loaded up with water balast for the flight out here from europe to simulate the passenger load.

Not sure if they had it loaded for the short hops between BNE, SYD & MEL though.

I think the fact that it has massive wings which produce a heap of lift made a difference also.

It apparently is supposed to have a similar take-off distance as the 747 despite a greater max take-off weight.

They did find that the turbulent wake was a lot higher than they anticipated, and will effect the time/distance between the A380 and other aircraft on arrivals and departures.

The way this plane has been built, pratically any company in Europe who owns a lathe can claim some input into its construction Heck, there are even Aussie components in it! (Does that make it a TRUE AussieFrog? Should it be named the AF380 ?)

So therefore Citroen probably supplied some reliable part, like hydraulic spheres for the suspension on the pilots' seats or similar

Do you think for takeoff they pumped all the ballast to the back so they could chuck a wheelie down the runway

It'll probably be banned from flying to the US coz MD and Booingggg will lobby the gumment about some obscure design flaw.

They already have according to this early brochure!!

"Sharklike with voracious probing eyes, like spaceships in the sky...for a space ship, you must design with a skill and knowledge necessary to send a craft into space....you are left with a fleeting impression of superb power and blurred luminous speed....passengers in a DS are used to travelling by plane. Where is the difference?"

If Citroen were making "spacecraft" back in the '50s, then there's a good chance the A380 is a Citroen.
