    Hi All,

Just curious... how would an IRC Chat channel be welcomed for this forum?

Been there done that all before.
Logic is, if you have that why do you need a forum? Also, if anything of any substance is ever discussed, the lack of archival storage means it is not there for future reference.

IRC = Internet Relay Chat. An old (yet still preferred by some) way of talking to people in an internet chat room, kind of like a conversation on MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM or equivalent, but with lots of different people talking at the same time.

As for Alanís question, IRC can be logged if set up properly, and information contained per those logs can be stored for later reference. That said it doesn't offer the tidiness and readability of a forum based system.

The other plus to IRC however is that it can provide an Instant point of contact, as what you type is displayed instantly to all that are reading as soon as you hit the enter key

I think IRC is a superb idea.

Remember, the forum won't decline in activity, because alot of people still don't have the time to participate in a IRC chat. Also, people would like to seek the opinions of the majority of AF members, they'd post in the forum.

I've seen large communities with both forum and IRC, it doesn't seem to effect the forum activity.

I was just curious, since I have full access to an IRC server.

No big deal if it doesn't happen. Just thought it would be a nice place for conversation. Not so much to deter from the database-esque of this forum.

I belong to many other forums that all have IRC channels (not from my persuasion) and the forums are running wild.

But like I said, it was more of a feeler, to see what the responses were. No big deal if there isn't a huge roar of YES votes.

    Cheers

I'll leave the voting to those with experience, and the moderators/admin who'll have to deal with it.

I think it would be great... I would think that it would be mostly used for socialising however, the forum would remain the depoot for tech

Momentum, is that your car in your avatar? And if so, who's the chick?

edit: just noticed in your signature that you don't drive a 206. Who's the chick anyway?

Haha i wish it was mine. No idea who the chick is, just saw it on the net one day and thought that car looks hot and the chick covers the rice-boy hood so i saved it.

more on topic, i think i would use the chat more than i do the forum because most of the time i just like to see what other people have been doing with their cars, but the forum will always be the main source of technical info

I'm going to go ahead and do the channel. I shall post the details in this thread soon. And if enough people frequent the channel. We'll see if an Admin can put the details in a sticky or something.

Although I'd be lying if I said there won't be technical discussion. And ofcourse there will need to be some rules written (which I shall do very soon) so as to avoid discussion reaching boiling point and setting it up for World War III. My experience as admins and ops for other channels is that if things get too technical, refer them to the forum.

I think we can safely try it out. If there are major issues of qualms, then I will close the channel and call it history.

BTW, keep the responses coming, and more votes. If you are thinking of voting, please do.

    Cheers

IRC chat would be a great idea!

Like others said it might increase the socialising side of this forum. I say try it, why not it's free. Not hard to moderate (d*cks can be easily dealt with, with a kick + ban). Just find a nice secure and stable servr (ie. not dalnet) and you're off. Perhaps Austnet where IPs are masked therefore reducing any malicious attacks that could be made by exposed ips.

It would be great, if a Java IRC applet could also be added as a link on Aussiefrogs, so those who can't be bothered downloading IRC, won't have to.

This service is usually provided by the IRC server (i think euirc, dalnet and a few others do), all you basically do, is link to the applet on their server, from aussiefrogs.

OK guys, the channel is online, and just being set up at the moment.

I'll look into a java solution for those that cbf installing an IRC client or are at work or something.

The details, for those interested in joining up (without the quotation marks):
    Servers: "us.madchat.tv" & "madrigal.madchat.tv"
    Channel: "#aussiefrogs"
    Port: 7000
Enable SSL security options, if you like.

Still some niggles with security, setup, etc. So bare with the instability for the first few days.

    Cheers
