Default Top Gear Hot Hatch Video

has anyone viewed this? i don't understand Jeremy's conclusion when he clearly believes the Megane is quicker and handles better. The Golf only has a better feel interior.

it's a good sign of things to come with the Megane Cup soon to land in our shores though!

I think it came down to the overall package, build quality, ride, handling etc. Whilst the RSM had the edge on the GTi, I feel Jeremy considered the Golf as the very marginally better package overall. September Evo magazine came to a similar conclusion as well.

Probably one of those things, if you like to drive hard get the RSM, if you want a very good allrounder get the Golf GTi. In reality though, in every day driving, I reckon it would be hard to split them. You really would have to be The Stig to get that extra 0.1 second out of the Megane :-)

Any thoughts on who "the stig" is .. some people even suggest it's been 2 or 3 people.

When they had Mark Webber in, he was given a tshirt saying "I am the Stig" & there seemed to be some kind of in-joke.

It's only 'cos Jeremy loves the MkI and MkII Golf gtis so much. I have a DVD of his where he drags off a MkIV Golf Gti in a MkII and beats it.

Don't forget that the Mark IV Golf GTI in the UK was different to ours. They had a non turbo version that was pretty darn piss weak.

The drag was actually a later 1800 mk1 GTI V MKIV non turbo so as not to let the new car win. The mk1 and 2 had all the ingredients that made the 5 turbo and pug 205GTI hero cars.

Not suprised aussies never understood hatchbacks with cheap fuel and huge displacement!

Um if anything the vauxhal performed the best in straight line speed, its just to bad that having that much power at the front wheels and not configured properly with suspension and stickier rubber on bends let it down...........
