Default Aussie competitor for our French Hot Hatches.

Look out GTi180, RCS ... here comes Holden

    http://www.drive.com.au/editorial/article.aspx?id=10252

Although they are thinking it'll be a Subaru WRX and Golf GTI competitor, doubt it. What would it have to have to temp you to the dark side, be nice to see it in the 2006 BFYB against the two Frenchies.

Don't think the GTI180/RSC are its competitors. It's a very powerful turbo'ed car... and from all reviews I've seen/read is a right handful to keep on the road! EVO compared it with Golf GTI, RenaultSport Megane Trophy and brought in a Focus RS to revisit.

They tested it in the last season of Top Gear (I think) They rated it is an amazingly powerful car but really too much power for the FWD chassis.

I agree with Lincoln in that it's probably aimed more at the Golf GTI/Megane 225 than the 206/clio.

I dont mind the styling of the Coupe but I dont know if I could bring myself to owning one. I'd much rather the Golf as it's a 4 door and is a little more practical

I reckon that the blindspots in that thing would be huge however!

not a massive fan of the looks but love the sound of the output. I think we're getting a more sedate version though, compared with the UK??

There's two versions. Holden is getting the "regular" turbo one (~147kw) and HSV will sell the "crazy" version (~175kw).

Really hot hatches are a pretty niche market. I reckon Holden will have to pull out all the marketing dollars to sell more than a handful.

There were rumours that the VXR that TopGear tested was pre-production (not the correct suspension tune). Who knows... it did lap (with all that wheelspin!!) nearly as fast as the improved Mergane Trophy and much faster than the Golf Gti.

Recently scanned a real road test (comparison with golf, mini etc) of a production VXR which said simply that it was one of the best larger hot hatches around point to point (ie real roads). Lotus have done their work onthe suspension. It accelerates faster than the 3.2L Alfa 147 GTA!!!

I think Holden should shoot themsleves in the foot and bring in the VX220 Turbo. Direct Lotus rival and dosn't really compete with any other car in its segment. - Chris

mmmmm And at almost 1/2 the cost of the lotus they would sell ... but sports cars on holdens never really went well together, failure after failure.

The VX220 Turbo sells for approx 90% of the price of the Elise 111R in the UK.
Not sure where you get 1/2 the price from.

For comparison, the VX220 Turbo is more expensive than a loaded Nissan 350Z.

I can understand why Holden didn't bring it in... it would not sell. Doesn't sell well even in Europe!

that's right... I remember the Stig had a bit of trouble with the car... and Clarkson said that around the bends the car is rubbish. It' called the VRX there I think. It did easily beat the new Golf GTi in a straight line if I remember correctly.

Yeh, it had the megane and gti on the straight, but it seems its not as well balanced as the gti or megane. Too much power up front. Around the test track, as driven by the Stig, it was 2.1 seconds quicker than the VW, but 0.5 seconds slower than the megane 225.

Theres no doubt what my pick of the 3 is.

Clarkson however would opt for the GTI, because of its practical layout and balance.

I would have to agree with Clarkson on that one. I'd love a GTI because it's so well balanced. It looks a little boring compared to the Megane but I'd still get one (in White just like my S16)

Does now, yeah it's never been 50%, but in 2003 when I first saw them they were significantly cheaper (something like 3K+ Stirling) convert that to AUD and you would have been talking 10K+, nothing to sneeze at. Still if Holden wanted a "hero" car they couldn't do much worse then previous attempts (thinking Piazza (or what ever it was called) and Calibra - which didn't do that well). They would be better off NOT sticking a Holden badge on it, we can still dream though .. like the Renault Spider that only a few made it down under.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. I betcha it will go, though. I would still buy a Golf over it. I think they will still be made in Europe, though, so they are still more of a Belgian competitor. In that case they are kind of still French... I think it is either Belgian or German. Either way surely Holden wont be building a plant for low volume niche cars like this one...

Have seen one of these new astras in the flesh and I think it looks quite nice. A bit too much detailing in places which makes it look 'busy', but I like the proportions.

yeah its detail is almost over the top, and may date quickly, but hey what a looker! its in your face, and looks fantastic, and draws some styling cues from the roofline of the megane 3 door. still a big fan of the megane 3 door, too.

its pumping out some amazing figures, and at a fraction of the cost of the hyper hatchbacks e.g. golf r32, S3, 147 GTA... to dob in a few.

cant wait to read a local review on how it measures up in a comparo.

When I first saw the Coupe in Germany, I thought it looked pretty good.

Autocar rated it ahead of the Golf GTI and Megane Sport recently.
