I can't speak for all, but I know one that does it for skin protection .. if you're driving a car with a non-UV filtered windscreen your hands are exposed a lot. And if you've have skin cancers removed (like this person has) then reducing sun exposure is important (yes they are Asian).

Why others do it ??? Dunno Maybe they want to keep their hands clean?

Maybe they like their hands to slip as they turn the wheel... especially during an emergency manoeuvre...

But the UV impact on the hands could be a large part to do with it. I know my mum does it... not sure if it's because her hands are cold or what, though.

Mum falls into both categories... but she wasn't on Epping Rd

I had to wear gloves at all times outside for 6 months whilst my hand recovered from 3rd deg burns....but those white cotton gloves are downright dangerous for driving! (no grip at all!) I bought myself a pair of track riding gloves which are the perfect driving gloves! even better grip & similar feel to skin. I still put them on on drive days in cold weather
    doesn't answer the question tho

There could be something in the sunburn theory; I have quite a few Asian friends but I've never heard them complain excessively about sunburn. Midges and Mozzies I know reckon they're good tucker. I was on Fraser one day with a Chinese woman in our group and at Central Station that day, the mozzies were around but not in the numbers they usually are. She was getting eaten alive and I was standing right next to her with nothing biting. They were literally flying past me to sting her. I know a mate of one of my sons is a full on Kanak and is as black as coal and he burns like hell.
My right arm is covered in suncancers and it's true that as you age, the skin gets thinner and more susceptible to scratches and sunburn, but I haven't noticed it getting any worse in recent years.
I suppose if you were going to wear white cotton gloves, you'd be best wearing the gardening types with the black rubber dots on the palms; at least the wheel wouldn't slip out your hand.
Methinks it's more a fashion staement than anything practical.

A lot of asian women hate getting tanned. In asia, some of the gloves are the long variety - goes all the way up the arm and end up at the arm pits. Having fair skin is the beez neez for asian women. But cotton gloves while driving is a bit silly coz you can't grip anything.

Maybe they all are big OJ simpson fans?!... or perhaps they don't want to spread theirs dermititis,....
I used to wear my race gloves whilst i drove in the S16 to wear em in before a big weekend of racing.
So imagine this, young guy in a balck s16, with aftermarket wheels, roll cage, race seat, exhaust, stereo on etc whilst wearing race gloves... leaving from work 11pm on friday night in the CBD.... "right, pull over son" - Chris

I've seen Japanese taxi drivers wear them, but I thought it was part of the uniform over there. They have freaky doors too.

xTc is right. Melanomas often occur on the hands and many doctors advise people with fair skin to protect themselves with gloves. Its more common
than you would think, I see plenty of people wearing the in Perth although
as Aus points out bloody slippery on the steering wheel

yeah anhtu is right, asian women especially the older ones like to keep their skin pale. vanity exists in every culture but it's not very practical to be wearing white cotton gloves while driving...but neither is laying out in the sun all day to get that tanned look only to look like a dried up prune when your older.

I thought Michael Jackson wore only one glove, and on his right hand? Hang on, I think that picture might explain that...
