    Default ACA last night

We all know what a great job of reporting ACA and Today Tonight do... But who caught it last night?

One of the segments was on new car ownership.

I quote "Anyone who buys a new car is either very rich or a bit stupid"

Basically the whole thing was trying to prove that buying a new car is not a good investment... Well no fu*king duh.... who the hell buys a new car as an investment???

Apparently a gentleman purchased an Audi TT coupe for $70000 and after three years he took it back to trade it in. With 80000km on the clock the dealer offered him $24000. Well I am morally outraged! And will not buy a new car EVER!

I am neither dumb nor rich, but I bought a new GTi180 as it is the car of my dreams. Some people dream others live.

Anyway, just another great piece of 30 minute journalism..

It defies belief that anyone watches that sensationalised, fictionalised bullsh!t.... At least they don't have the ghall to call Today Tonight "A Current Affairs" .... They should be called "Nice sob stories ... for the severally mentally challanged ...".

3years old, way above average kms..... I'd say $24,000 is about right, just show me a car that doesn't depreciate by that amount ... The more thay cost new, the more the depreciate (at an horrific rate). Did they chase a dealer down the street "Sir can you tell us why your trying to rip this nice gentleman off ".

Lets start harassing the ABC to bring back Frontline ... That was the best Current Affairs program I've ever seen

I rarely see any/many of the TV tabloids due to having too much on my plate at that time of day coupled with my opinion that they should almost have a humour rating the claptrap they waffle on about.
Keep an eye peeled now for either a big car advertiser (Ford) releasing a new model so needs to clear the decks of trades or a few used car yards or auctions having an advertising blitz.
There's usually a hidden agenda to that type of story.

They did interview(interrogate) the salesman, who explained that the car had high k's, appeared the have had panel rectification work done and was presented in a shabby condition. It still was a good beat up by ACA.

Wonder how ACA would cope with the local BMW dealer here?

Friend of mine went to trade in his '95 318i (bought from said dealer) and they told him

"sorry we don't trade in 318's anymore you have to sell it privately, then come back to us!!"

He explained his disgust at a BMW dealer not trading in a BMW THEY HAD SOLD to him, and promptly went and bought a car from Sydney dealer with the trade in.

But back to the ACA story,

Aren't dealers allowed to offer anything they want for a trade in?? When did they suddenly have to be responsible for giving a person the best price for an overused and underloved car?? oh wait we are talking about the general population here.......... nuff said.

Best part was that no Citroen was on the list of cars with the worst resale values/depreciation!

    Nissan Maxima was the worst.

There's a few on here that'll have to do some hard yards to rectify that discrepancy.

These type of advertorial and investigative bullying shows perplex me as to their popularity and longevity.

I guess after this week they will be on again with the stock story interviewing some guy from Auto Auctions about the bargains obtained by buying a car at auction. The buyer will be Sid Snot who bought a black Audi TT (no mention of k’s or condition) for $30,000, “an amazing $50,000 below retail”.

The month after the next story will be on Darlene Spinks, a single mother of five who got stitched up buying an Audi TT from a dealership called Freds Fast Cars (pause the video and if you have a keen memory it will be the same rego as the previous two Audi’s) with 30,000 k’s on the clock for $50,000 which after interest and repayments over 30 years will end up costing her $926,000. Not only that but the car ends up being a lemon and is found to have been rebirthed from five different cars.....

The follow on story involving Ray going undercover infiltrating the youth gangs who rebirthed the Audi………

I just love hearing it retold on the train the next day.
    Tabloid journalism really works.

    Gold!!
    ---------------

I wouldn't buy a new car unless I was in the market for a porsche (because the amount they lose in the first 3 yrs is not that much more than they lose in the 3 yrs after that). But yeah it's obvious most people (excluding tradies, couriers etc) don't buy a car as an investment so it's stupid to do a story on it.
    Take the long way home....

Saw the segment. Think you guys are overreacting a bit.
Many people would not be aware of the depreciation of a new car. This is not helped by dealers (salespeople) who talk up the value of their brand of car on the second hand market. Don't think any are excempted - from what i hear of the common brands.
Supply and demand. Come in suckers.
Sort of was comforting to watch in a 'schadenfreude' sort of way as it is usually frog cars that get that treatment, cits in particular.

I heard of a guy today who has done $115000 on his car in 18 months, in 18000 km's. Cool huh.
It's so weird hearing people tell me they are insulted by a trade-in price I have offered them.
    As if it's personal.
I get angry at being the messenger, who they unload their disappointment upon.
Bizarre stuff. It's not personal! Trade-in prices are set by the buyers. Not the sellers. Simple really.

The best one I encountered, was a lady who was insulted with our offer of $4K for her.....wait for it.....'98 Hyundai excel!!!! (I thought that 4K was doubly generous compared with market value ) she stomped off claiming she had been offered 6K...but wanted $8K for it! (as a trade in!!!)..by my calculations that would put the 7 yo car on the used lot....for almost the price it was bought new!!! (I don't think she had heard about depreciation ...or maybe if you refuse to acknowledge it...it will go away! ) (not! )

The brain functioning of some has to be questioned. I am dealing with a guy at the moment who has a $49000 payout on a Jag worth $23000.
He wants to pay $15000 in cash and to sink an extra $11000 into the new finance. Just to get out of the Jag!
He will be paying off the Jag for the next couple of years, whilst his new Bavarian car is depreciating.
    Mental!

Hmm.... i'm questioning his brain functioning not because of the finance issue, but swapping the Jag for a BMW? err.....

Maate you need to travel a bit , remember USA is the superpower and most of their shows make ACA seem like a documentary, and not referring to Springer (thats porn ) And Itallian porn , I mean tv - enough said.
The Auldi TT new price was $82k. The Worst car for depreciation was the Proton Waja. The retained value leaders were Merc, 2 Subbies a Mazda and Ford XR6 ?? And dammit the renault logo was prominent in the lead in to the story but did not feature in the best or worst or any other part of the story.(phew)
