Andre is indeed a very nice/ "genuine"/ person...I still have his business card and wouldn t hesitate dealing with him in the future..... You really need to have met this "gentleman" to appreciate where dogboy is coming from.... If only there was more people like this around....(and this coming after an interaction that lasted for 1/2 an hour)....such is the impression. A true enthusiaist....passion, modesty...etc its all there...

    cheers

    Let's put it this way;
I'm presently sorting a car that has been serviced by 2 repairers down south and another up here that is an absolute bloody scandal. (Comment made by someone with mechanical knowledge visiting "How come the OFT hasn't been informed about these types?")
When I get the pics I'll be posting them or nobody will believe me, but for a couple of reasons I can't name the culprits:

#1 - A couple of people here always give the impression that if one word is spoken against these types(even if they're not named), we are "specialist bashing" and I end up on the receiving end of abuse both on & offlist for being honest.

#2 - They also have mates who mainly lurk here and if their names are mentioned, it comes through the 'grape vine' that they consider they are being libelled and ask for it to either stop or be deleted; it hasn't occurred to them that if they were honest, it wouldn't happen in the first place (can't have honesty and integrity getting between them and a fast buck,)

So, if someone gets some good service and finds an honest and reliable repairer, I think we owe it to the repairer to give him a pat on the back if we can't give the dodgy ones a kick up the khyber.
At the end of the day we should get the same result in that the honest one gets the rewards for his honesty. If we can't name the shonks, then at least we should be able to promote the honest ones and to me, this is not spamming!

    Default Word up!

Have to say "Goodonya" for that summary of the repairers' status quo.

My specialty is Victorian through pre-war houses and I see similar stuff far too often; shoddy work by people who have the right references.

And when it comes to cars and you find someone with a brain, someone who can follow instructions, someone who understands - it's natural to share the pleasure. You might even argue there's a moral dimension to it if the prior activities of another business have been borderline crooked. (Would you stop a burglar from entering your neighbour's house?)

    Look forward to those pics!

    Adam.

Agree Alan and addo, I think it is just the repeated "bumping" of the thread that was being objected to.

It was only yesterday and before that April 20 so it's only every 3 months or so and it's only been twice.
Other option I suppose he could have posted the same message again; same end result though. Think how many times some promote repairers by contrast.

    yeah that was it...

I'm all for getting good people referred & agree 100% with what you said, but from "my point of view" you could be his 2 best mates & he could be dodgy as all heck... (just trying to make the point, no offence)

Perhaps AF should have a "Preferred Vendor" page, where they could get visability, & i'm sure they would be happy with chipping a few $ in to help AF along?

Al... you're so subtle in your generalisations...

If anyone has evidence of poor workmanship or dishonest dealings and it is factual then there is nothing libelous or slanderous in reporting it as a warning to others. No one has ever successfully been prosecuted for expressing fact or truth so lets not hide behind bush legalities.

Similarly if anyone has positive experiences then they too should be shared and used as the basis for others to make informed decisions (just like the bad experiences).

What I object to are inuendos and slurs without any detail or fact and moreso blatent ofensiveness (like comparing some specialist repairers to peodophiles)... unfortunately some people are not prepared to aknowledge the difference.

I'd support nothing more than a posting that read "I have seen the following invoice xxxx for the following work xxx from repairer xxxx and it is quite obvious to me that the work was either not done or unecesary or over charged for.... etc etc.. that's factual... and it also gives the person in question the opportunity to respond or others that have had specific positive experiences with the same person the opportunity to provide some ballance.

Everyone has made mistakes and everyone has happy and less than satisfied customers its all a question of numbers.

I've had work done by ........................................ and was dissapointed and had other work done and it was brilliant.. but I am more than happy to recomend him as he was always courteous and profesional in my dealings with him and invaraibly ended up satisfying my expectations.

Similarly ................ has done a lot of work for me over the years and some has been bad and at other times I have been very angry and frustrated but more often than not I get what I expect, get the right outcome (sometimes eventually) and have always been charged what I beleive is a fair price. More importantly if ever I have felt Tom has done the wrong thing he listens and does his best to fix it.. and that's why I recomend him.

I have taken several cars to ............. (a Citroen delaer) on three seperate occasions due to circumstances, time and proximity to my home and have NEVER been satisfied, could never recomend them and will never go again even if it means walking!

They tried to charge me $185.00 for "Inspect and test Air Flow Meter, Operation OK".. which was absolutely ludicrous and were far from interested in listening when I complained.. these are simply the facts.

There is nothing slanderous or defamartory about any of this just like there should be no suggestion of profit or conflict in any positive recomendations such as Andrew's.

I am a little miffed however that we are happy to recomend people we are (subjectively) happy with by name and give all their contact details but not do the same for those we believe have behaved unacceptably in their dealings.

Hopefully others can or are prepared to see my point....

Oh and hoepfully we can agree to leave this be once and for all

I strongly disagree that you should site this sentence as having any use in commonsense or law.

Many have been prosecuted and persecuted for doing nothing more.

Power and money makes these wheels turn, fact and truth are the first casualties.

Caveat emptor; (he alone is responsible if he is disappointed) or I should say 'act with caution'?

    Jack

sorry mate but we have a rule on this board that no repairer is to be defamed in any way no matter if you have a greivance or not

i know a couple that i would love to name but as such i keep them to myself

on the other hand if you have something good to say then by all means say so

any post or thread that defames a repairer will be deleted or edited end of story

    regards

I have to thank the crap repairers in a round-about way - if it wasn't for their inability, I'd have no DIY experience!

I'm supporting the mods on this in asking that this thread goes no further, though I'm not locking it, hoping that this isn't needed.
