Icon13 PMs and full inboxes on Aussiefrogs

I'm probably as guilty as anyone, but just out of curiosity, how often do you guys empty your PM boxes?
I think the trap is that whilst there is an allowance for 300 messages, each time you send a PM, it gets posted in the outbox so when the response comes, that accounts for 2 not one as you might think.
I often get PMs from people and when I try to respond I get the dreaded "such'nsuch's" Inbox is full
It's a bit like e-mail; you only seem to keep the ones you never need to refer back to. The important ones get deleted....

When was the last time you cleaned the crap out of your inbox and in some cases, are you aware that once it's full, nobody else can get though???

I've given up on it, virtually...

The PMs fill so fast (what's this 300 jazz? I have only 70!) that it's impossible. You can get a PM and then type out a long reply, then go to send it and find that you can't because your own PM boxes are full!

I ask people to e.mail me. What's so hard about that?

By the way, I keep the PMs because they contain phone numbers and other details I might need again.

Why on earth would I want them on a floppy?

The thing is that where they are they are indexed. I don't know how to do that otherwise. Well, maybe I do, but I consider it a time-wasting exercise.

And the option of an e.mail is always there for people to contact me. And the beauty of that is that I get the message whether I open the aussiefrogs site or not.

    .

I'll bet quids the other 230 are in the sent or outbox.
Look at the top of the PM page or look where it says "Inbox 70 messages" and if you hit the down arrow on the RHS of it, the number of sent will pop up.
It's not hard to get lost in there.

No, Alan... I have 39 in one and 31 in the other, and it says the limit is 70.

What's more, when it reaches 70 it stops...

On the contrary, all the more reason for those with a limit of 70 to clear out the unwanted stuff!

I get PMs from all over the place on a variety of subjects but all too often as you say, the recipients inbox is chockers.

    I don't recall saying that...

Anyway, if the management decides to give me a 300 limit, I doubt mine will ever be, as you say, 'chockers'.

The problem is the person with the full mail box doesn't get a warning message that someone tried to send them something, but their box was full. Not everyone uses the email option. So other then start a thread that says ... dude X please clear out your PM's so I can send you somthing (DJ-Studd ), you have no way of telling them.

    - xTc - who normally flies within 10 of the limit, but usually keeps it under 70.
You're not fooling everyone, or did you forget? .......

    Actually, you do...

An e.mail arrives saying that such and such has tried to send you a PM but your box was full. I got one last week, but there's been no further contact.

This is why people should know to use e.mails.

Is this with e-mail notification on or off (or both?)? Also some people don't want their email address known, fair enough.

I think the only person who gets to see your e-mail addy when you send via the board is the receiver. I don't think it's generally available is it?
So if you don't use PMs and you don't want to show them your e-mail addy to the person you're trying to contact, I suppose option 3 is snail mail and don't put the senders address on the back of the envelope.
The only reason I can see for keeping your e-mail secret is if you're a porn spammer or have a work e-mail that others may be able to access.

    Icon2 Pot call kettle black???

Just had a look at stats for retained Private Messages

Firstly yes, Mods/Admin have an allocation of 300 messages, general members 70.

All mods/admin, myself included are running close to maximum allocation, with the exception of Brad and Doublechevron.

Yup... time for a tidy up

    Cheers

I have no problem giving people on this board my isp provided email address. I think the vast majority of people on AF are sensible and have a high level of personal integrity. At least the fellow AF'ers I've met so far seem so.

And UFO who only had 136/300 before a bit of a cleanup a minute ago. Now down to 123/300.

    For M Greenblood

We have a constant battle at work trying to keep people within their VERY generous 50MB/100MB/200MB limits (depending on organisational role). Most organisations give all users less than 50MB.

When people call the helpdesk and complain that their mailbox is full, they get a bit narky when we ask them to clean it up.

Ah well, everyone in the IT department (esp the Infrastructure Manager ) must have unlimited email box capacity just in case an important automatic notification comes in. We cannot miss those or the business may be severely impacted.
