Default Advice on importing a motor vehicle from Europe.

    Hi,

Just doing a bit of, if only at the moment, but I would appreciate any advice on what to do from someone who has imported an old vehicle into Australia recently. It would be another resto. Definitely a retirement job in a few years.

I’ve read the Australian Government/Customs website, but I’m looking for help re a good shipping agent ex France maybe Germany. Are there any hidden pitfalls so to speak? If it goes ahead, it will be done on a very tight budget, so a quick delivery is not essential. Hopefully that may help to keep costs down.

    Cheers,

Roll on roll off shipping is ok even if the car doesnt run. I have never had any damage on cars i imported ,and cheaper than container. Need to check asbestos rules.

There’s a good article about asbestos in cars being imported into Australia in the May 2019 issue of AOMC News.

There’s a company in the UK specialising in inspections and reports specifically to cater for Australian Import Approvals.

Whilst it may not necessarily suit your tight budget, it may save a lot of pain in preventing Australian Border thugs ripping your new purchase apart.

I watched classic restos last week and Fletch was importing a 60,s us car for himself and the only thing he needed to remove were brake shoes. It was a non runner going in a container so he just put the drums back on then wheels then fitted new shoes here.

My advice is make sure you have an import permit. The permit does not cost much but you are screwed if you don't have it.

    Spot on.
I've brought in about 1/2 dozen vehicles from the US over a decade or more & this permit does take time, usually not days, so don't commit/buy/pay for vehicle until obtained.

Read through all the conditions & vehicle needed to be before 1989 or maybe 1988.
If unsure call the feds but they rarely answer the phone & were slack in getting back or answering e-mails. They do not like modified vehicles either!

LHD can come in but one needs to check with local authorities regarding registration of same in their particular state.
The vehicle must be immaculately cleaned otherwise big Quarantine issues or even vehicle returned @ importers cost. Also a/c refrigerant had to be removed & certified as such.

Buying from the UK rust may be an issue to address before buying.

I found the people selected to do the local port/shipping clearance varied markedly in their prices & tend to be a rip off considering the amount of work they actually do!

Also from the US if one didn't have the vehicle title & just a bill of sale the US Customs authorities would not let the vehicle be shipped out. Anywhere else be aware there can be issues similar to this.

Thank you to everyone who responded with sage advice.

At the moment, I feel a bit like an air traffic controller, everything is up in the air and in holding position. It has been established (by phone) that the seller doesn't speak English, so it is was left to translated emails, which is not a good situation. A friend in France, is trying to get hold of the seller and he will handle the negotiations for me.

As for agents, that is sorted. Been referred to an agent down here, who liaises with an agent in England who has storage facilities/depot just outside Ipswich. They also provide a collection service from France and other countries. The agents fee covers all the paperwork and handling etc except for cleaning, if Australian Customs deems it needs to be done again.

So it is now a case of wait and see... Fingers crossed.

    Cheers,

    Dano
