Default Vehicle scanners ( OBD2 etc)

    Hi All
Would like to learn more and find resources for using these diagnostic tools on our French cars.
I have an icarsoft branded scanner tool that is useful, but it currently isn't talking to the ECU, although it happily talks to the BSI.
Can't seem to find many resources on solving these sorts of problems.
I guess as it's just a computer, you turn it off and on again or reset it - but how.
If people have any resources to share, please do it here.
No doubt manufacturers have 'how to' info on such things that they would not share , no doubt.
    Any experiences or tips appreciated

    Steve

    Gotta love computers
Ampersand pound thirty nine is ASCII or some such nonsense for an apostrophe.
Send me the person who put computers in cars in the first place!

Hi. I have had a play with Ebay jobbie scanner for a laugh, but my mechanic reckons if you really want ones that work, you have to pay up. He says he has several bought from the USA, to cover all the cars they work on, and which cost a few bob. Also they need updates every couple of years.

    Hi
If you want a scanner for professional use then you are correct. And as said they need updating as the new cars coming with newer systems. But for home this is not the case.
All older french cars will need a clone of the factory software to get most things from them. They used their own bundle of software and it ran on the old 32bit windows systems. So that is a problem as it is all 64 bit systems now. And that old software is hard to use too.
However you can get some stuff off them after some date because EOBD was made compulsury for basic data scanning. So worth a try to use a cheap unit and see what you can get. As time went on a lot more was made available on the standard EOBD/OBD11.

    Tend to agree with Andy.
Have a cheapish Chinese OBDII. While it allegedly has the VW capable reading on it, it is crap. It can't reset the Service in 9 days or 1100km. It's practically useless.

OBD isnít fool proof anyway, my 205 has been hesitating for months, absolutely no codes or lights at all. Decided to get a new O2 sensor fitted after reading a post here as ďthrow parts at it and see what happensĒ fix et voilŗ, sorted.

I bought one from OBD11 in China been running around in circles for about a year now, they sell you 2 discs -badly hi-jacked ones they get free from net-mine had 4 virus in them -contacted OBD11 they reckoned "never had a complaint!!!" crap
Their instructions are in in chink, with a mouse that move at about 200 mph.
Best source of software -free was from MHH Auto in Europe somewhere and free.
    best of luck,baz

Try RossTech VCDS for your VW

I purchased the basic version. Well worth the money for a solution that works fist time very time an installs easily without stuffing around.

    Works perfectly on our Skoda.

Yes RossTech is the only way to go for VW Audi Skoda, I had the basic version and it did everything on the Passats I owned, unfortunately it seemed the VW Audi dealer techs used something similar as they also said no error recording engine is fine.

Wrong the 16v hea had several cracks behind the valves and was using coolant like there was no tomorrow.

Moral of the story is the mechanics need to go back to basics and not rely on error codes being captured. duh

If i spend that much i would like it to work on the Megane as well. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VCDS-vag...4AAOSwEK9Tt8Yr
Probably only works on their brands?
The ds150e doesn't look like extinguishing the service notice nor does it cover the megane my 2015

The truth you don't need to spend that much.

    Try Ross tech directly

    https://store.ross-tech.com/shop/cat/VCDS

I have the $199 US system, and after installing software it is plug and go.

Or if you love ebay you can buy the software from Ross tech and try your luck with cables from ebay.

For me, I'll pay a bit more and bought a package, let Ross Tech have some profit and have tech support, and free updates.

The setup is as should be: nothing like the circus installing PSA software.

    The choice is yours.

In answer to Dmccurtayne if the answer to my post was directed to me? If the average bloke received imported discs scanned them and got a virus repert like mine- what would be the obvious action?

Thanks, Rob. At this stage it only needs to extinguish that that service notice since i changed oil and filter myself (out of warranty anyway). Aslo don't know if she'll keep the car.
If the OBDII would be good for the Megane as well i wouldn't mind buying. Anyway, one of her friend's father has a garage in Burke Rd. and i'll just ask him to do the reset.
Stupid thing is, smart from VW's business generating aim, it tell in the owner's manual how to reset - but the procedure doesn't work.

    Watercooled suggest this procedure

It's a Mk7, p 61 is as described in owner's manual. Doesn't do it. Tried several other versions as well.

Can't see why. There are dozens of YT clips where the procedure is shown and it seems to work.'

Here is cut and paste from Watercooled Forum on an Australian vehicle:

I reset the service message myself - it's real easy to do:
    The process is:

    1. Switch off the ignition and press and hold the reset button on the center lower part of the front dash - It has the numbers ""0.0" embossed on the switch

2.With the reset button pressed, switch on the ignition and then release the reset button

    3. Press the reset button again to reset the service interval message
The poster suggests the procedure works on the TSI & TDI MK7s.

I'll call customer service tomorrow and see. Doesn't work for me. The oil change did reset though.

Customer service dismissed me to a dealer, as expected.
Went to Camberwell VW and the service manager tried the manual procedure - no go. He got the computer and just reset the service reminder at no charge and no fuss.

I understand what you are saying but I have ran this software on plenty of PCs and never had an issue also itís the key gen again that is the issue it is detected as a virus Iím not trying to sell anything but IMO itís the best cheap ass tool out there donít forget all these are pirate software so unless you want to fork out 4K for a g scan or similar you need to know what you are looking for the ds even codes keys to 307s etc
Donít be scared turn your anti virus off and have a go if not I will buy your interface off you would be good to have a spare
Ps you are showing me dodgy psa software not the ds150 that I was referring to

So obviously the "service reminder" is considered important by the manufacturer.

You certainly can't complain about the service !
