Bob, I lived in country WA as a kid and we weren't connected to the grid until 1974. We had our own Lister lighting plants (it was a business; a roadhouse). One of them ran 6am to 11pm every day. We also only had a guaranteed water supply around the same time; previously, the town used to run out of water!

thanks for that Rob, although seems too good to be true, gotta be a catch somewhere. All the Historical Society is interested in is the service charges, they use bugger all power. Current supplier offered a small discount on the usage charges, they said that the supply charge was set by Powercor, another furphy ?

Ken, panels are OK, but only if you are there to use them. You only need enough of an investment to run the fridge etc. It's pointless to install a roof full of panels if you are a young working couple, unless you want to help out the power companies. The Historical Society interest in panels was only prompted by the maybe availability of a grant to get them installed - we'd be better off ripping out a meter, but there's hurdles there too.

Apologies to the OP, this thread seems to have been hijacked.....

    cheers,
    Bob
