    Default Become an Aussiefrogs Subscriber!!!

Today marks an exciting new chapter in Aussiefrogs history. The administrator-funded system we've been using to keep the site financially viable for the last few years has basically ground to a halt and is no longer workable. In order to keep bringing you the content you enjoy, we're moving to a subscriber-funded system. This gives you, the reader, the opportunity to directly support Aussiefrogs by purchasing a subscription to the content you want to view.

In two weeks time the entire website will be secured with a password-protection system. Only subscribers will be able to access the various sections of the site. You can purchase subscriptions on a monthly basis using Paypal or Direct Deposit.

The pricing will be as follows:
Aussiefrogs Discussions & Off Topic & Humour: $1.95/month
    Above + Specialised/Tech Corner & Events & Motorsport: $5.95/month
Above + Froggy Classifieds & Off Topic & Humour: $10.95/month

All prices include GST and are in Australian dollars. We will consider discounts for 6-month or 12-month packages.

The ordering system will be available soon. We hope you'll see the value in this new financial model for Aussiefrogs. We envisage that this forward-thinking step will allow us to bring you more content, faster servers and help build a stronger sense of community. Thanks for your support!

You know it'd be more believable if it wasn't copied word-for-word from the OCAU main page.

On a serious note re: server speed, if RAM is the problem, and PC2100 RAM is what is needed, I have 512MB of the stuff that is gathering dust..

i dont think this is a good idea for aussie frogs at all, i think if this forum becomes pay per view you'd be looking at loosing a lot of the new members and not haveing new members joining up, as if this forum becomes pay per view then people wont know what aussie frogs is about

EDIT: hmm is this an aprils fools that ive falen for ?

Actually, it's a damn fine idea. There are some things in life that are worth paying something for (not a lot mind you, just something).

I had the razor sharpened and the warm bath ready before I realised; in my defense I'm viewing this on the 2nd. Phew, that was close.

User Pays .... everything is heading that way .. people think it's OK cause then it's fair to everyone (the high consumers pay more). It has it's drawbacks though ... some people can't afford to pay, should they be denied service (talking about things like healthcare here).

User pays might make sense if we still weren't taxed to the razoo. Let's see - these days, we pay for roads, a very large proportion pay for their health care, a very significant proportion pay for private education, tertiary education costs keep going up, welfare rules are much tighter. Where do our taxes go again? Oh yeah, 70% super rates and lifetime pensions for pollies...

Compared to elsewhere our tax rate is reasonable, possibly a little high for what we gets but its not that bad.

The welfare state is fast diminishing in Australia.

A question? High taxes and a large welfare state or low taxes and a user pays system?

    Yep: Efficiency vs Equity.

You can complain about tax, but it's simple - pay less tax, get less in the form of government provided services. You try to make sure people don't rort the system. You can go overseas to countries where taxes are much lower, but you notice the consequences of that too. Money can't cure everything but it helps.

I met someone who was doing an internship at the World Bank in the USA. He then went to Sweden for half a year. What was one of the first things he noticed?

"It's amazing going to a country that seems to have no poverty"

Note the word 'seems'. Of course there are some poor people in Sweden, but the point he was making was that there are a hellava lot more proportionately in the USA. When it comes to crime, I know where I'd rather be too. Although there are probably some other things that help - look at the council bike loan scheme in Copenhagen (basically borrow a bike from a rack for a small fee to commute around). In most cities a lot of the bikes are stolen, few are stolen in Copenhagen - the Danes seem to be pathologically honest.

The USA actually has higher taxes than you think. Sweden's corporate tax rate isn't high at all. Australia is somewhere in between the European & US systems.

What's the lesson of this all? One of them is, there's no such thing as a free lunch Now, lets keep this all civil please

Yep ... sorry I raised this ... politics and AussieFrogs shouldn't mix
User pays is an interesting philosophical topic, perhaps left for the next group get together.
