    A Panhard-Levassor (1890-1895)

From the Wikipedia; I know there are 12, but these are the best French Cars!

1769 - Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot builds the first self-propelled mechanical vehicle.
1859 - Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir develops an internal combustion engine.

1884 - Edouard Delamare-Deboutteville is credited in France with building the first gasoline-powered automobile.
1885 - Amédée Bollée begins manufacturing steam-powered vehicles.
1887 - Léon Serpollet begins building steam-powered vehicles.
1887 - Panhard et Levassor established as a car manufacturing concern by René Panhard and Émile Levassor, with the first car produced in 1891.
1890 - Armand Peugeot produces a four-wheeled car powered by a Daimler gasoline fueled internal combustion engine.
1894 - Albert de Dion and Georges Bouton produce a single cylinder gasoline-powered engine and in 1898 produced a four-wheeler. They had previously built steam-powered vehicles beginning in 1883.
1894 - Delahaye is founded by Emile Delahaye. The company is bought by Hotchkiss et Cie in 1954 and discontinues auto production.
1896 - Armand Peugeot starts to build and fit his own engines to his cars.
1896 - Léon Bollée builds gasoline powered cars.
1898 - The Renault brothers, Louis, Marcel and Fernand, sell their first car.

Great list.. replace the Venturi with a 406 coupe (if it looks THAT amazing, you'd forgive it almost anything) and a Facel Vega and a DS Cabriolet.

I didn't think the French made good cars.

I have always presumed AussieFrogs was a mutual support site for those that realised AFTER they had bought their French car that they made a mistake, and rather than admitting it and getting rid of it, they took the psychological approach of resorting to denial and seeking the company of others so afflicted.

And then you went and broke the first rule, and mentioned it... The whole point of denial is that you deny it.

Now I'll have to get a Volkswagen...

In no particular order, my roll call is -

    Citroen DS/ID (All)
    Renault A110 1600S
    Renault 16
    Citroen CX (All)
    Peugeot 205 GTI
    Renault 8 Gordini
    Citroen Traction Avant
    Citroen 2CV
    Peugeot 504
    Renault 4

Like J-Man said, some of these arguably may not strictly be the "best" French cars ever made but each had a profound influence on motoring history in one way or another. Cheers.

Renault hasn’t been missed after leaving North America over 20 years ago, thanks to the bitter aftertaste of models like the 12, Le Car and Alliance.

The R12 and Le Car (R5) had won numerous awards around the world for their innovation at the time, the yanks just couldn't change their perception of what a car is.

    Anyhoo my top 10

    Cheers Renomad
