Default Slow forum/ database errors/ time out forum displays

There were 118 databse error emails awaiting me in my inbox tonight.
It seems the database was completely offline between approx 8:00 & 9:00 qld time.

From the errors I am receiving, the poor server is running low on RAM.
We must be giving it quite a work out as we are the only MYSQL database on DCSI.

From an admin point of view it makes data backups a bit of a challenge when the memory is near full.

Hopefully it is only a temporary problem.

The slowness is not bandwidth related.

I have an old Celeron 900 with 512mb RAM I'd be happy to donate to the Aussiefrogs cause if that's any help? Either that or pull the RAM out of it.

Unfortunatly the forum would likely run on a share server with ram dedicated to it. I'm not sure if a dedicated PC could be incorporated into the DCSI network

I thought our forum ran on a dedicated Celeron 400 or thereabouts...
although I'm not sure. If it does, then the offer of the machine is there.

I can donate an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Mobo with 256 PC2100 if you need it?

Its sitting here doing nothing & i'd rather ship it up instead of ebaying it!

Well tonight's the first night in ages that the forum's been relatively quick. Something's changed no doubt There's a fairly normal number of people online (around 50) at the moment.

Well, it's back to being as slow as a wet week - I click to load a page, it sits there for about 30 seconds with the progress bar inching (millimetre-ing?) along, then all of a sudden it loads. I've had no time-outs or errors though. Any ideas?

Board came to a standstill for me about 10:30pm 1/03/04 I gave up and went to bed (of course it may have had something to do with me trying to do an unsuccessful backup)

    Not too bad this morning

    Cheers

    "Déesse" Roland Barthes, 'Mythologies', 1957

The Déesse has all the characteristics of one of those objects fallen from another universe that fed the mania for novelty in the eighteenth century and a similar mania expressed by modern science fiction: the Déesse is first and foremost the new Nautilus.

Yep doing a backup uses all the available memory.
I get an error email for everytime someone sees "there seems to be a problem with the database" page. Last night there were about 30.

I am powerless to fix this problem as it's hardware related & 2000k's away from where I'm sitting.
We will have to be patient for a fix I guess.
