May was a month with too many public holidays and although the gross figures were 4% down on last year, on a working day basis regos were up. As usual the split by manufacturer tells an interesting story. Citroen were down 15.9%, Peugeot down 6.8% and DS down 44%. Renault down 3% and Dacia up 10%. The winners were imports notably Merc up14.8% and BMW up 27%.The latter delivered two Rolls Royce, double last year's May sales.
It shows that as the economic confidence comes back, the buyers of luxury cars are back in the market and the DS brand has failed to occupy the segment.
Meanwhile unemployment rose again in May, the 31st month of the 35 Hollande has been President when that has happened.
This is putting pressure on the margins in the lower priced segments.
