Default Is this a new scam

Just received this email from the Australian Federal Police , the English is not very good " You've got been issued using a traffic violation " and the nature of the offence " Cause: inattentive car driving "

Both these suggest a scam , has any one been hit before .

I did not follow any of the links.

It's not a good idea to post a copy of the contents of an email with live links to a site that will almost certainly install malware on your computer. You should remove it from your post ASAP.

The Australian Federal Police don't do traffic work for state police.

Could be easily done inadvertently. I only accidentally noticed that they were still active.

True, neither do State police e-mail traffic citations, at least not in Qld.

Damn - I haven't seen that one, and I sometimes do follow them up, using a machine that they can't hurt and an IP that is safe.

All these rip-offs depend on HTML (browser) display in your mail client. HTML forms no part of the mail standard, in fact it is non-conforming, but that didn't stop Windoze from pushing it. Turn off HTML display and in plain text these scams and their links become obvious. Microsoft machines are almost always the malware target.

If you are brainwashed into HTML, try adding a script that will clearly flag links where the underlying URL doesn't agree with the text displayed. I draw a no entry sign when I get one.

The header of the message will indicate where it came from - usually an infected Windows box that should be put off-line, and if it came from Australia I'd notify the ISP.

Thanks for the pic. Unfortunately it's just the HTML display from someone's client, not the actual message.

PS I tried to find information from the government sites, but they seem to be aimed only at the lowest common denominator of users. No details at all, and endless warnings without mentioning the systems targetted. I don't know how much we are taxed for Scamwatch, but it's wasted. Lots of generic guff and no real information.
