Default car registrations France Jan 2015

The year has started with some curious results. The market was up 5.9% over Jan last year, but reversing the trend of previous months, the majority of the gains went to foreign marques.

PSA gained 2.9% largely under the Peugeot marque (Peugeot +10.6%, -4.6% for CitroŽn, -20.3% for DS). and Groupe Renault were down 3.3% while their alliance partner Nissan was up 26.6%
Toyota were up 10.4%, Smart 58.1%, BMW with Mini 14.8%,Hyundai 26.8%, Ford 18.2%, Fiat 9.7%,VW 6.8% and GM down 7.7%

Could it have anything to do with dealer demo registrations?
I know here in Oz, the sales figures were manipulated last year by dealers registering higher than usual demonstration models. Their figures would look good one month, but then the next would be a shocker.
I mean, who in their right mind would not buy a used demo with 22Km on the clock at a substantial discount to a brand new car?

I notice a very significant increase in Smart registrations. Is this from a very low base?

Do we treat Smart as a French car and if so do we have any owners as Frogs?

Smart has a new model based on the Twingo platform and deliveries have just started.
It was a Swiss concept and the marque is now owned by Daimler who assemble them in a French factory, including a platform made by Renault in Slovenia. Renault is in partnership with Nissan and Daimler with cross share ownership. The Twingo, Smart and A series all share common developments by Daimler and Renault.
