Default Russian market takes a dive

The Russian car market has been hit badly by the falling value of the rouble and the consequent loss of spending power with risking costs of imports. It went down 17% last month and looks like exceeding 12% fall for the year.
Renault-Nissan now controls Avtovas that makes Lada. The three marques are aiming at 40% of the Russian market so this fall in sales is important to Renault's overall operations. Renault are now tidying up Avtovas in the move from from government ownership and protection to a free market. They are getting rid of thousands of jobs. Meanwhile Lada sales were down 19% in June relative to 2013. Renault only slipped 13% due to the strong performance of the Duster, Logan and Sandero, elsewhere branded Dacia. The Nissan sales, in a marketing push of the marque are up 40%.
Next April, Ghosn plans to reintroduce the Datsun marque to Russia with a positioning of no frills and low pricing.

PSA are playing it tough. Peugeot sales are down 48% and CitroŽn 49%. With the import duties coming down it may be appropriate for some companies to scale back local plans and move to importing.
At one stage the GM PSA Opel linkage had high hopes for the Russian market, perhaps now it can be supplied from Chinese factories?

Tata Motors in India are first and foremost a truck and bus manufacturer and it is those products that they are taking into Russia again. They are not in a position to set up a dealer network to handle their general range of cars.
However Jaguar/Landrover which they own, has a solid position in Russia going back to its Ford days. They sell about 1,000 vehicles a month through a dealer network of some 50 outlets.
