There used to be a Studebaker hanging around somewhere I frequented (as you can tell, I don't remember where...) that had chrome plated mudguards...

I have to say that looks pretty cool!
I heard of a guy that went a bit overboard with chrome plating on a 911 he was building - apparently he chrome plated the cylinder barrels along with the rest of the motor. He then had to pull the motor down again and have the plating removed becuase it overheated - shiny doesnt get rid of heat as well as matt black

Ahhh, photoshop strikes again, and some clever 3d modelling, nice thought though.

hmmm..i looked at the article these shots came from, sounds like fiction, written to make you belive...being a retoucher myself I'm very cynical of anything like this, and i think doing it in 3d and photoshop, even professionally would be cheaper than to chrome 4 cars. No matter, the shots are beautiful and impressive either way. If they are real, theres still been a massive amount of work done in post, like "wheres the reflection of the phographer?"

Yep. They are real. Part of some merc exhibition or so I've heard.

It's not hard to hide the photographer, I'm sure they took that into account while taking the photos.

I wouldn't expect to see the photographer in the photograph itself because every surface, apart from the grille, has normals which either go above the photographer's head or in front of his shoes or to either side of him.

I too am a little sceptical... Especially of this shot http://www.germancarfans.com/photos/...02/1012big.jpg

It's a shot in the rain, but rain drops are only evident on the top surfaces of the car. Do these chrome plated Mercs have some new German technology that prevents water from running down the sides of the car? I think not.

In any case, whether they be real or not, they look very impressive!

    Dew and not rain ?

But yes this wouldn't be too be hard for a talented 3d modeller / photoshop expert.

    Check out these Examples .

Yeah, nothing's impossible in the world of the guys that do this. I guess I'm just being too picky, but I think that particular photo was a rush job and the forgot about the rest of the rain drops!

Here's some examples, all of these shots are done entirely as 3D and based on models that you can download for free...simply map a background on and your at least halfway there. These dont look as good as the mercs, but then they are just rendered models. Maserati actually used these shots for their brochures. Note that the Maseratis are the same model, just different angles and colour. Anyway, I wish I could do 3D work like this
