She finished by saying the biggest problem was the car ride home, when the kids get told what they did wrong. I was going to scan the drawing that accompanied the article. It is a great sketch of a little kid standing by the back half of an R12 by Bentley. But then thoughts of copyright entered my head, a shame really as it is a great sketch for R12 enthusiasts.:(

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just my eyes getting weaker.

My RX4 has the white background instrument cluster and right on dust I can't read it. That time when its just getting dark and time to light up I find it near impossible to read the instruments. Its fine before I turn the light on and fine once it gets dark but just at dust its impossible to read. Same thing in the morning coming to work, on a dark wet morning with lights on I've no idea how fast I'm going.

I solved to problem by changing the cluster for one with a black background. Now I don't have a problem, I can see perfectly.
Anyone else have this problem?

The good thing about the new speedo is that its done about 10,000km less than the old one so now the car doesn't need a service.

OK, here we go.

After arguing for using the usual hydraulic switch on several occasions (see http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98726) I've had to eat my words to get a really responsive switch that operates on pedal movement.

This change was necessary due to even new switches failing to operate with very light pedal pressures, due to my fully overhauled system working nicely at low pressures.

So I have devised an extension to the brake pedal that operates a microswitch (Jaycar Microswitch SPDT, 250 VAC, 10 amp capacity, page 160 of current online catalogue, item SM-1040). This switch can be wired to switch on with the little button either depressed or released.

In my case, I've organised the pedal extension (flattened non-annealed rigid copper pipe, so easy to work, bendable but strong enough) so that the pedal, when released, holds the microswitch "in" and the first few mm of pedal movement releases the switch, operating the brake lights. The copper pipe is bent so as to be out of the way but not to catch on the bodyshell or impede pedal movement in any way.

The switch should handle the power easily but we'll keep a close eye on things.

Works like a dream and the switch is inside so not subject to water splash.

The photos show the whole installation and an oblique view with the switch in the "on" position.

Cheers

Ventoux engine cylinder sleeve copper seals - bulk order, any interest

A few of us rebuilding engines for 4CV, Dauphine and R4L have had difficulty getting the copper seals for the bottom of the cylinder sleeve where it seats in the block. We've found a local place that can supply / produce them which is good. Not so good is the per unit price. Not so surprising either.

The bulk of the cost is in the setup. The more seals produced in the run, the lower the cost. Since we had some difficulty sourcing the seals at a reasonable price we figured there may well be others out there with the same issue. So we're looking to see if anyone else wants to put their hand up for a set or two or more to boost the overall order to a more attractive price point.

I won't swear to it but I'm pretty sure the same size seals work for all the various piston sizes in the Ventoux engine series from 747cc, 845cc etc since it's the outside of the cylinder and the block that are the determinants. The critical issue is that the cylinder sleeves must be the ones that have the ridge running around the surface that seals rather than being flat. Flat ones need those other seals that are not made of copper.

The good book talks about three thicknesses of 0.95, 1.00 and 1.05mm - we're just going for the 1mm size as nobody seems to be offering a variety anyway.

The alternative to this could be someone telling us where to get these little gems for less than A$9.00 landed cost each.

Let us know if you have any interest - anyone with one of these engines should have a set or two in their stock of spares . . .

Today the R19 snapped its clutch cable rendering it useless too.
Murphy has parked himself at my place and is having a good giggle at my expense.

I cant even just drive the fuego without power steering as I'd have to cut the belt, and then take the timing belt off later in order to put a new power steering belt on...... Nice engine design there renault!!!

SO for the next few days I'm driving around in a white auto corolla which makes mums i30 seem like a laguna in comparison, and the fuego seem like a gokart.

What is the fastest production Renault. According to some English press recently the fastest production Renault is suggested as the RS 265 Megane Trophy at 158mph and 0-100kph in 6sec.
I suggest that this is not right and the Renault Alpine A610 is faster at 165mph and 0-60kph in 509sec.
Not bad...

Not bad for a cr built 1991-1995. Any comment?
