Well for a good GS engine I use Penrite HPR15 but in a worn GS I have used Penrite HPR50.

You mean gearbox ?? The motor should blow smoke on startup, it does by design.

Big end or main rattle? BEs are a problem because of the pressed together shaft...

Don't worry about the grade of oil.... just put a drip tray underneath and recycle what she loses. Topping up after smokey starts doesn't require much oil. remember the thing is a half way engine. Half way between a traditional 2 stroke motor bike with roller bearings and a real 4 stroker.....a double 2 CV !!!
( well almost ). I had a friend years ago with an Austin 1800..never needed an oil change ever.....the throughput from regular topping up had the same effect as regular oil changes. Being air cooled a G engine will tend to run hot especially after years of grime build up, despite the fan. I am sure someone will contribute about how extensively you can remove the pressed tin ducting with the engine in situ..either way a good degreasing especially around the oil cooler is worth the effort....might help remove some of the smelliness too.

I've never had a 1015 do that, it must be a 1220 thing.
