Default Posting for a friend with a 1986 CX GTI turbo 1, full throttle mishaps

    Hi everyone

I talked to a friend last night who has got some issues with his GTI turbo, under full throttle the car gets starved of fuel, the same effect like on a DS who is not getting enough fuel and splatters and shakes. I think it gets better as soon as you ease off the throttle. Obviously first is change the fuel filter...

I know there is probably a gazillion things that could cause it, Shane any ideas ever encountered a problem like this?

    Thanks
    Corne

    hi Corne

Shane will be eminently more qualified than me to suggest solutions to this problem, however my CX turbo had what sounds to be a similar problem when I first owned it.

Under full throttle, and particularly under boost it would miss and shake which sounds something like what your friend is experiencing. A new set of plugs and leads solved the problem immediately.

    cheers Simon

They're suspecting the coils, but I will ask him if they replaced the plug leads and plugs, we just had a quick chat.

    Thanks

Nah, it won't be coils, they work a the "wasted spark" principle. Each coil fires two plugs (one being on it's exhaust stroke). This means if you have coil issues, it's obvious as the car will run on two cylinders. If you'd jumped on here saying "help my CX runs on two cylinders whenever it's hot" ..... We'd say "Check the coils!!"

Just had a chat with him

Plugwires and plugs new. So not here. Under full throttle as soon as the turbo spools up then the fuel starvation sets in. Before I knew about this problem he asked me to get a new fuel pressure regulator so I got a new one for him. Im still waiting for it though....

    So no hope yet

    Default Jurking CX 2,5 Turbo

Thanx to Corne for starting this thread.

I registerg last night. Like isaid to Corne is the engine reves threw fine but as soon as you drive it and the turbo starts boosting round about 3500rpm it starts jurking as if running out of feul. I dont have any knowledge on the cx so dont even kow where to start looking.I found the + terminal loose inside the one coil, when you pull it the coil dies down. Is there a replacement coil that i can use or is citroen one the only option.

Ok, it's a turbo 1. Check all the hoses and the "O"ring down on the solid metal hose off the turbo. Any leaks in the idle air system will cause issues (usually at lower engine speeds though).

It'll likely be electrical, check the earth point above the battery, pull the spare wheel out then remove the metal plate under it. Under here you will find a number of wiring connectors. I had to replace all of these ( I could never clean them well enough). Check all of the hoses that run off the turbo wastgate, don't forget the small one that runs back to the sensor hanging from behind the interior air intake trumpet. Also check the wiring plugs across the back of the motor.

the reason I keep mentioning these wiring plugs is when you use more power, the engine will twist in it's mountings, this flexes all the wiring and may pull on the wiring connectors (it also flexes all of the intake plumbing).

    Thanx for the advice.
had a fiddle arround all the wireing one of the wires going into the one coil is loose when you pull it the car goes over to two cilinders.Need two new coils do you know wich replacement coils i can use. i see the one coil has two wires going into it and the other one has three, after fiddeling a bit the car runs fine now.
Could you perhaps tell me where the outside temperature unit is located.
I still have allot of issues to sort out, but let me just sort one thing at a time.

The exterior air temp sensor should be down near the front right headlight somewhere (I can't remember exactly where it's screwed on). I cut a lot of the wiring away from mine trying to remove all the black rott in the wiriing.

The 4panel display has never worked for more than a few weeks at a time in my car sadly. It needs a new one
