    Default Smelly Airconditioning

When I put the air conditioning (or just the fan) for the first time the smell of a cigar club fills the cabin for the first 30 seconds or so. It doesn't make a difference if the recirculate button is pushed or not. Any ideas?

If you've not owned the car from new, or knew it's previous owner/s, then it is possible that it may have been owned by a heavy smoker....

If used constantly on recirculate by this person/s then it is possible that the vents, ducts etc are coated....but it would have to be extreme...

Is there a filter in the C4 system that can be replaced (as SAABs have)?

There may be a pollen filter, (usually located under the firewall plemum on the drivers side). If it is old and damp, the cigar smell smell is diagnostic.

There is a product called nilodour.

If youíre still having issues after a dust/pollen filter change, try running an ozone generator in the sealed cabin for 10 mins with the A/C, fans running.

You will only need to do it once (or maybe possibly twice for a really extremely "smelly" cabin).

That never fails to neutralise bacteria spores and foreign particles that may be causing an odour (either pleasant or unpleasant), just don't leave it in there for any length of time or too often unless you want to see what happens to your trim and plastic under an extreme escalated oxidisation scenario....

I'm pretty sure some evaporators aren't coated, so can grow bacteria on the fins, causing that "curry" smell when you first turn the A/C on
