    Cambelt- 1.7 Diesel

I read (Parkers Car Check - a UK thing?) that cambelt failure in the XU series engine is always terminal. Presumably this applies to the XUD?

Anyone had cambelt failure & survived?

Are there any easy checks without taking the head off?
    Thanks
    Jono

    Hi There,

I assume you mean a BX diesel, unfortunatly these cars were never sold in Australia.... However point your browser to:

The BX Citroen board, it's mostly UK based but they have much experiance with diesel engine BX's and cam belt breakages.

I have heard of them breaking at low engine speads and surviving, but there is only one way to find out.....

    good luck,

Well, it's not possible to have a cambelt breakdown and surviuve due to the engines geometry. Pistons are bound to crash with the valves (or at least one of them....) causing damage. I've experienced a cambelt breakdown at low RPM with my 17 TRD (Norwegian designation - not to be mixed with the english "turd")Camshaft broke, but beyond that - no damage so far (the car has run approx. 10k km after the incident)

Yes, a compression test would give you a lot of info.
