    Default do BX's look ricey?

I thought when BX's first came out (20 years ago?) they looked good - but now they look kinda ricey to me. I hope this doesn't offend BX owners out there but it seems so many other hoon cars on the road now have that same ricey-bodykit-shitty-look about them, which has the unfortunate effect of making the BX look like a tryhard (even though we all know it isn't underneath )

    That's a bit of a low blow
I'd be pointing the chop sticks at all the "modified" 206's & 306's before looking the bx for a taste of asia!! They are a beautiful and stylish car, as unique today as when they first appeared.
But then I look at them through rose coloured glasses
Others I'm sure will be happy to agree with you

The body on the 16V looks sort of 80's tacky, but that was the norm back then. I wouldn't say it was ricey though.

Please feel free to let me know what's "ricey" about this?

I'd be interested in the comments......

Keep in mind the design is over 20 years old now!

There is of course the BX's Russian sister (I don't think Bertone charged for the design given it had been used 15 years previously!)

BX 16V is more Lego than rice

Liked the BX styling except for the bland front end. Probably a concession for producing something a little more mainstream.

There's probably scope for a thread about cars with cutting edge design that became blander with time as they were imitated.

If you lived through the 1970s you may recall Fiat's beautiful Pininfarina-styled 130 Coupe, whose exotic straight lines were reduced to the commonplace by the appearance of the XA Falcon.

The XM had the edge taken off it when Bertone did something of an encore with the Daewoo Espero.

It's more likely a case of imitation being the highest form of flattery.
When the Daewoos came out at first I could never tell them from a GS so it isn't just the BX, although whereas the BXs are a squarish style, rice usually comes with more rounded corners.

If it ain't broke, use a 12" shifter.....that usually does the trick!!

I actually think he meant the XD Falcon (the square one)...

I read an article a few years back that had them connected in some way (even had them pictured next to eachother) but I still have trouble drawing parallels between one of the most stylish and pure coupes ever built with the XD Falcon brick...

    Enough Hectoring thanks Troy

Not look alike. The straight edge style inspired by. Bwheeheehee.

Alan - Espero inspired by XM, not BX. Sloped nose, transparent C-pillars, slippery curves. At least they commisioned a new (albeit derivative) design, rather than just resurrect the Opel Kadett as they did with their other early model out here.

Errr XD ok. A bit closer, but still to me a tenious link. Classic styling always remains that, the 130 Coupe is still beautiful, and the XD Falcon still a brick.

Wasn't the XD Falcon styling a rip of the Euro Ford Granada?

    AFAIK, yes.

The link is in the imitation of the style, not the replication of the form. Mainstream interpretation of avant garde often becomes a banal shadow of its inspiration. There's no end of precedents for this effect in popular music, architecture, automotive design, etc...

Bx's look like the things they are - Plastic Lego cars.
Having driven one or two of various spec - they also do what an 80's car is supposed to. travell along with rattles and bumps. but Id never say they looked 'riced' - even the 16V body kit - just lovely sharp lines that suffer stress fractures.

I especially like the BX 16v. Very nice looking car - like a timewarp back into the 80's. All my mates reckon I should get one after FCD after seeing Brenno's 16v. Really sharp lines and those alloy wheels really do top it off!

Nothing else really looks like it - very unique car!

Its the body-not-quite-coloured bumpers that do it perhaps, although this was a crime of taste generally in the 90's.

When the BX was being designed at the beginnning on the 1980's (came in Sept 1982), Peugeot actually wanted the BX to have standard suspension, untill all the Citroen design team at Velizy had a revolt and so Peugeot caved in and let them.
