The cabin is impressively finished, to the eye if not the ear, and there's also a useful array of storage spaces.

This is where I lost all respect for the writer and stopped reading.

Forgive the lapse into metaphor, but it's like day-old bread compared to the freshness of a Ford Focus or Mazda 3.
I've driven my mates (auto) Mazda 3 SP23 (115kW) as well as the C4 VTR (80kW), and the C4 had a much better feel of bother power, response in the throttle, and steering.

When I first drove the 3, the steering was VERY heavy but I could get used to it, but after a couple thousand kms it has loosened up so much it's as bad as driving a Magna/Verada. You can't feel ANYTHING! The 3 still feels sluggish to me, and has very little low-end torque.

I'll admit, the 3 is very well screwed together (I can't comment on this regarding the C4), and the 3 has a very nice ride - even if it makes it feel like a much larger car.

I wouldn't trade my VTS for either of them!
