What the hell is that on the bonnet? A spare set of wheel clamps or a bear trap

I think the front of the thing on the bonnet looks like an 8 inch floppy drive

    "Déesse" Roland Barthes, 'Mythologies', 1957

The Déesse has all the characteristics of one of those objects fallen from another universe that fed the mania for novelty in the eighteenth century and a similar mania expressed by modern science fiction: the Déesse is first and foremost the new Nautilus.

Very close - it is the rarely seen or used Binford 6500 combination wheel clamp/bear trap/Mother-In-Law control device. It also has the added benefit of adding 15kw at the wheels.

Despite me pointing out the tautology of Binford's use of bear and mother-in-law, they insisted on maintaining the original name.
