    Default Xsara Problem

    Hello,

On my 2004 Citroen Xsara (5 door, 1.6L), when going in reverse, it seems to make a kinda screeching sound. I took it for the service and they fixed the problem, but it has started again.

Any idea what this could be?

    Regards,
    Uga Boga

    brake dust maybe

give the wheels a good hose out and see if the noise calms down a bit and if it does then get some brake cleaner and throw at them

other than that i have no idea without knowing more about the car and where the noise is seeming to come from

If it's a 2004 model, does it really matter?
That's what warranties are for; let the dealer get the migranes.

If it ain't broke, use a 12" shifter.....that usually does the trick!!

Did you ask the dealer what they did to fix the problem?

I had a similar noise in my BX that I reckon was a small stone caught between thebrake rotor and the pad.
I took it to a deserted park, stuck it in reverse, gunned it & stabbed the brakes a couple of times & it popped out & has been OK since. Being on a Xsara and being new, I doubt that this is the poroblem but I understand that non asbestos type brake pads can exhibit some weird things at times.

sorry to change the subject, but recently ive been getting a nose coming from the gearbox area, whenever i am driving and have the car in gear, it stops when i put the clutch in...ive been told by a friend that its probably the bearings starting to go in the gearbox...is this true??

are they covered under warranty?? how long is warranty?

Does the Xsara & Berlingo have the same gearbox?
    I suspect so.

You get a 2 year unlimited K warranty with your new Citroen. If it's still under warranty get it to your dealer for repair.
It sounds like the same problem I had with my last Berlingo, worn bearings.
    Berlingo Gearbox whine
I am still waiting for France to assess my out of warranty claim on the repairs from Jan 04.

I'd advise you to get it fixed by your dealer before the warranty runs out or be out of pocket by 1k + until Citroen France makes up their mind.

Re the squeal: again my Berlingo had a similar problem but it was during very light braking, like moving in slow traffic. To fix, the dealer removed the rear brake drums & cleaned out the dust from the shoes & socks

Citroen's warranty has been 3 years/60000km's since about the middle of 2001.

That's interesting. It seems that the Berlingo is the only model to have 2year unlimited K's, both my new & old Berlingo's have this. Commercial reasons?

Xsara's would be 3 years, sorry

Yeah, it looks like the 3 year warranty is for passenger vehicles and the 2 year warranty for commercials.

Thats right. You can also pay $995 (or so) for 6 years or 200,000km's. Its only done 2700kms and this noise was experienced a few hundred km's after buying it new, then took it for the first service at 2000km's, for a 100 or so km's the noise was gone and has returned again.

Hmm... didn't know you could get extended warranty from Citroen.

The noise sounds like it could be the rear brakes, but really you would have to get the dealer to look at it to get a better idea.

I was offered the additional warranty option at Rick Damelian. Not sure about the other dealers, haven't asked. It was 6years/160,000km's actually. (just checked the quote).

However Rick Damelian does have a bad reputation.

I contacted ateco on the extended warranty actually. The reply i seemed to get was that it was up to the dealers to offer such a thing and it totally independant of ateco. An extended warranty seems a good idea for complicated small cars with cramped engine bays & tight belts etc and gearboxes....

So i went back to the dealer and in regards to the noise when reversing (from the rear), he said that this is normal for a new Citroen Xsara and should go away with time, the same reply applied to the gearbox jumping a little bit (lets loose) when going slow speeds.

    Any truth to this?

On the whole, aftermarket extended warranties aren't worth the paper they're printed on. I did manage to successfully make a claim on my aftermarket warranty for the 306's cooling fans. Took some convincing though.

One other thing - I wouldn't say the C3 1.4 or the Xsara 1.6 have particularly cramped engine bays Daniel

apparently the sound coming from the gearbox may be a worn clutch....which isnt covered under warranty.....we'll see tomorrow...

Bu11$#!+ it's not covered by warranty!!

It's the throwout bearing on the clutch and if it's worn out at >60,000 klms it's faulty. I've got Cits here with over a half a million klms on the speedo & they're still OK. Only a faulty throwout would stuff up at that mileage; don't let them tell you that crap.
