    Default C5 X7 2.7 Ltr Overheating

Pushing the car along today, sports mode & manual gear changes and after a little while loss of power. Water temp up and oil temp up. Stopped pushing and temps dropped back.

Car 130,000 km. 33 degrees outside.

Not sure what happening as it should be able to work hard for longer than it did.

Going to take it for a service and get oil changed in gearbox but any ideas on what could be causing it?

Is the radiator fan functioning as it should?

Think so Craig. Temps went down when I lifted the foot. Coolant temp dropped quickly. Oil temp took a bit longer. Windy uphill road.

Would never happen in the CX

Unusual in the C5, thatís why asking.

    Hope you are feeling ok.

    Hi Laurie
You are correct that should not happen. After all it would be able to climb the alps ok back in the 'home' country. James Bond would choose one for a chase, perhaps ! Some random thoughts !

Are the undertrays and wheel arch plastic shields all in place. They usually get destroyed by parking up to kerbs and barriers. The spoiler there too, these all affect the front air flow and cooling. The fan operation obviously, multi speeds all working ? Plastic bags in the air intake or radiator clogged with grass or insects ? Give the coolant system a drain and see how clean it is. Flush and replace.
Good luck and then give it another thrashing to check

I cooked the engine on my Xantia because the plastic headers on the radiator started to leak and the radiator temperature soared as did the oil temperature. I have a feeling that the underlying cause was perhaps a blown head gasket or crack in the head resulting in pressurising the radiator resulting in the leak. This happened with a few radiators. The car is currently having the engine/auto gearbox replaced with another. Then maybe a new manual radiator (can't source new automatic radiators) and an automatic cooling radiator.

After driving my wife's 2000 Camry (bought to replace the Xantia), I've decided to throw money at the Xantia and at least enjoy a car that drives like a sports car and doesn't clatter over bumps.

No indication of running super rich.

Looks like I will just have to see what the mechanic can find. Car is now 10 years old so gearbox oil should be changed. A good coolant flush and see how we go. Only gets driven hard very rarely but still shouldnít happen.

I had a similar problem on my 2.7 HDi Tourer some years back. It was a dead fan. I suggest starting there and then doing the other maintenance. Robin.

Well coolant system was gunked up and needed a good clean. Fans ok. Engine oil & Gearbox oil changed just in case. Now to get some time to go and see if that was the problem.
