    Default Stinky Chinese rubber

Anyone else had the experience of receiving some Chinese rubbery car part or other item and finding the only place it can be placed is outside due to the horrible stench? Any effective fix other than throwing away? I suspect not. Latest is a gear knob.

It seems to be a worldwide problem going by this page:

I've only skimmed it, but it's widespread.

Last set of 'rubber' floor mats that I bought (SCA) were very umm aromatic! Smell eventually faded - leaving in the sun helped.

    Hi David
Not only rubber parts. I wanted a steering wheel cover for my 'new' car to protect it from the dreaded sun cancer in the future. I spotted a matching one at Super cheats that looked good. The smell was almost overpowering in the locked car, so I aged it for a while then refitted it. But it left smells on my hands then. It is off now and in the tire compartment. Just when i need it in this hot weather.

That smell is sh*t and seems to be on every cheap chinese part. Must be a solvent or mould release they use. Diluted pig excrement or similar perhaps.

I suspect it may be some plasticiser added to base plastic plastic to make it behave very much like 'rubber'. It just doesn't seem to go away and sometimes will stain anything nearby dark brown, even an LDPE bag. This knob is out in the sun today, but I doubt it will help.

Hmmm, their rubber johnnies must have a two level contraceptive effect.
