    Default SM camshafts

    Hi All,

My Sm appears to have severely worn camshafts. The intake is quite peaky/shaft and the exhaust is nowhere near as sharp and has scratches. I guess they are supposed to be the same sort of shape???

Can you advise where to get replacement ones from please, or is it easier to get them built up again?

    Thanks, Erik

Why couldn't you get them reground? Which engine? I assume they're solid lifters, which means you could reduce the base circle diameter of the cam lobe slightly and fit thicker shims.

Yes i saw those and no mine don't look like that. Is that a reasonable price to pay for them or should I look at getting them reground as Peter suggested? I am new to regrinding cams so that is why I haven't investigated it.

FWIW those are 2.7L cams. 3.0L, IE, and Merak cams are different....

By the way, the 2.7L intake is much sharper than the exhaust. Scratches are not good, but are there pits at the peak?

Cams can be reground, however, there is a high rate of regrind failure, the Italians back in the day seemed to make camshafts out of recycled coat hangers or something......

Given you have to take them out anyway, take them up to Camtech at Caringbah and get them assessed. My friend Malcolm is a straight shooter and will tell you exactly where you stand.
