Default DS 4 speed gearbox, oil check

    Hi all,
What's the correct procedure for checking gearbox oil level, on 4 speed?
    Cheers

There is an oil fill plug on the top face of the gearbox. On the lower side of the gearbox (the side of the engine that has the exhaust manifold) there is a level check plug. It's in front of the disc brake assembly. With the car parked on level ground, oil should be at the brim of the 'level' hole when you've removed the plug. If not, pour oil in the top 'fill' hole. Do it slowly so as not to over-fill and waste oil. Keep going until until it runs out of the 'level' hole. Wipe up any excess/ over spill and refit the plugs.

The top plug is awkward to get to, so some people just run a funnel and tube straight to, and into, the 'level' hole. Procedure is otherwise the same: keep slowly filling until until it runs out of the 'level' hole. Wipe up any excess/ over spill and refit the plug.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. Handbooks that I found had little info at all, maybe they didn't think drivers were up to it.
    cheers

Hello, and if the oil in the box is of unknown vintage, why not change it at the same time. 75w-90 I believe, GL4 (not 5).
Don't forget to throw in some Nulon! Whatever that is, in the UK Nulon was a hand cream...
