Default I've just bought an AX 3 GT and..........

Hi all(?) you AX 3 owners. I've just bought one which unfortunately is not one of your "one owner", "always garaged" variety. Its supposed to be an 1991 model but allowing for the way imports are often sold in this country this is likely to be a 'registration' date NOT a 'build year' date. It has the offset front 'badge' and what i think is the older dash. i con't find a build date on the car anywhere. I'm told by the previous owner that it originally had fuel injection but now runs a single Solex carby - no idea why. To get me started I'd like to get parts manual but can't find any on-line reference to such a document.
I'm keen to contact other AX 3 owners', also anyone who has any parts etc. I'm in Adelaide.

Is the speedo in miles or kms?
The older dash and offset front badge tell me it’s a mk1 car.
As to why change from a single point injection, to a twin choke carb, that’s easy....
    ITS MUCH FASTER!
I had 2 AXGT’s, I’d choose a carb car over the injection any day.
The later AXGTi had multi point injection, but I don’t know if this was ever an official Aussie import.

I'd have to check, but either 1990 or 1991-build for the Australian imports. 50 or 55 cars were imported. Either 3- or 5-door, Series 1 with plastic dash and single-point injection. Only weighed about 750kg but wasn't all that quick.

They were Japan-spec cars that had to be modified to meet ADRs. Incredible but true.

I spoke to the engineer in Melbourne who did the work. They all needed door crash intrusion barriers (you could see where they had taken the doors off), 3rd brake light (Hella aftermarket, like you could buy at Repco in the day) and standard GT fitment glovebox lid removed and replaced by lip used in lower spec cars (engineer thought it was a crash hazard - knee injury). You could buy an as-new glovebox lid on the accessories catalogue from the Citroen importer for something like $20. Funny that.

The cars had Jap-spec items like a cat converter overheat warning light, can't remember if it was disabled or not for us.

I bought my white 3-door with about 700km on it from a Citroen dealer in Balgowlah and drove it on a permit to Canberra. I paid about $16,000 for it, they started out at $22,500 or so - way too expensive. My Dad bought it from me and he sold it in around 2005. There was an identical AX GT 3-door that lived around the corner from us in Campbell too.

See if you can find a 4 digit number under the bonnet or around the front door pillars. That will be the RP number and will be your guide for spare parts and will allow you to get the date of manufacture when you plug it into one of the RP calculators that are on the net.

    Cheers, Ken

Thanks to everybody who responded. To get me started I'm trying to track down a parts catalogue but can't find any reference to same on the usual 'repair manual' websites. Does anyone know of a wrecker who specialises in Citroen - contact details would be great.
    cheers, Andrew16
