I had similar issues with my Gti.... an early model without the latter flywheel sensors. After EXHAUSTIVE investigation, it turned out to be a small module sitting above the coil (which itself sits behind the RH headlight). The module transformed a signal from the distributor to the injection system. Turns out they used a similar unit on a number of other cars, and I was able to use one from a Nissan to fix the problem. See if there is a thin two core lead coming from the dizy over to the coil. It's hard to see where this goes, without pulling the headlight out. The small module is bolted to the coil (from memory)

I liked the "EXHAUSTIVE"! Every word has a hidden story....

My GTi had a similar issue. It would lose power and then die for no apparent reason. Over time it become progressively worse to the point it wouldn't run above 2000rpm. The previous owner had pulled the airbox out and not put it back properly. There was enough movement for the car to receive a huge gulp of air and she would then stall. Wait a few minutes, restart and then it would be fine until the ideal situation and she would die again.

I know you all suspect electrical, but air can play havoc too.

    Cheers

Ours would do that too if (ahem) someone had not tightened an airhose clamp sufficiently. The other time was when the concertina hose split radially and the split only "open up" when reversing. Thank goodness for black duct tape.
