Default Series 1 C5 starting issues

Hi everyone i haven't been in here for years!

    I have a Series 1 C5 sedan. Diesel.

With a full battery charge I can spend up to 10 minutes cranking the starter and it won't even cough. I then ring my husband who drives to where I'm stranded, who then turns the key and it starts first time.

I've no idea of the technical stuff like what sort of battery it is. I can find out.

It's clearly got a good charge to run the starter motor for so long.

Our mechanic ran diagnostics las week and nothing showed up.

I'm over it. It's been this way for years.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Do I need to speak to it in French?

    Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Has anyone looked at the transparent section in the fuel line while you are cranking, to see if fuel is available at the HP pump straight away, instead of later?

I don't think so. it did play up for the junior mechanic who drove it. He just assumed it was the battery that was faulty.

I'll suggest it to my husband next time it happens. I'll try once and get him to come and look straight away.

My husband does most of his own servicing and repairs. It was only at the mechanic to have the timing belt done.

Sue, read this post and all the details regarding the burnt pin 11 on the fuse box within the engine bay supplying power to the in-tank fuel pump. It's somewhere to start.
When I picked my C5 up as a non-starter this was the issue, but may be the in-tank pump. This can be tested at home or at the mechanics with a information provided.

    HDI C5 wont start

    Good luck

    Thanks for the replies.

If the problem is with the fuel pump then how come my husband can start it?

It seems to start when it is really cold or really hot but not at mid range temperatures.

Husband thinks there's a problem with the temperature sensor not turning on the glo plugs when required.

Glo plugs have been replaced along with the sensor to no avail.

This has been going on for over 5 years.

Also we can hear what we think is the fuel pump running.

Why does it start for my husband and not for me?

Quickly adding that we have 2 diesel C5s the wagon starts for me nearly every time.

I know my husband is a sucker for punishment.(come to that so am I)

They are nice cars just sometimes temperamental. Don't get me started.

Hmmm you can hear the pump under the rear seat with ignition on but not started starts when cold so nothing to do with glo plugs.
do you use the remote to lock and unlock car and when you return it wont start? Do you have 2 sets of keys. Possibly one set has a bad transponder in the set you use?

I think the posters and the likers agree on one thing - that at first start you have a fuel supply issue. Try to establish that, and then suss out the culprit. The fuel system, tank to filter to high pressure pump and injectors, isn't complex.

I'm inclined to agree with dimistyle, but also check you haven't accumulated water in the line. The filter has a drain.
