Default Xsara boot vents for what reason?.

Some info on Xsara boot vents please ladies/gentlemen/others.
What are these for in reality? Situated behind the boot side trim on a 1999 Xsara hatch [if model makes any difference] a plastic grill on each side with 2 flap valves now curled up and useless they exit down behind the rear wheel arch allowing dust/road fumes/noise to enter the boot. There's also a grill on each side of the parcel tray supports, presumably to allow the air to exit via the lower flaps.
What the hell are these for, can I block 'em off?. Never had any cause to investigate anything like this despite lifetime in the trade. Very strange, something new every day I guess.

to make the ventilation system work you have to let air out of the car to be able to get air in

And so you can shut the doors with out popping your ears you can cover them with foam that helps with c5s

    Hi Tony,

They are supposed to be a one way valve so the flow through ventilation can work. But I guess the plastic flap has lost its soft flat shape that makes thiswork effectively.

    Cheers, Ken

Sounds exactly right although I never made the connection to flow through ventilation. Thought it was something to do with slamming the boot and popping the rear glass. Good idea from dmccurtayne, foam it is. Cheers.
