Default D special de Luxe in Australia

From approx 1971-1975 D specials sold in Australia were ? all de Luxes which aren't mentioned in the European books on the subject. Were more basic models sold here and apart from carburettors ( D special de Luxe got the Solex 28/36 SFIF v 34 PBIC ) and colour combinations ( eg green interior with white paintwork) were there any other major differences with the local De Luxe D specials ?

    Hi DOTJ

Australian D Specials were specific order for Australia.

They were UK specification RHD which meant button pedal brakes, they also had power steering, and turning headlamps, and a drivers side ventilation fan. The specs also included front seat head rests, no chrome on the indicator stalks, and the steering column padding. Door locks were also modified to suite Australian ADRs.

As with all D Specials, they came with white roofs, but they were repainted by the importer, so they didn't look like local Taxi's.

The DS's sold in Australia at the end had their compliance plate finishing in 12/74, because as after that time, they didn't comply the Australian regulations regarding a collapsable steering column.

    Best regards,

    Greg

BTW, I might remember more in the morning :-))

It's rare (maybe impossible) to find a late D Special that doesn't have a 12/74 compliance plate.

    Hi Guys,

The reason so many DS's had 12/74 dated plates was Citroen wouldn't do small production runs for Australian compliance cars, so an order might consist of several hundred cars in one shipment.

The CCC of NSW had a stand at the 1975 Sydney international Motor show. We were able to convince the owner of one of the Australian SM's to lend us their car to put on display. He was overseas at the time and the car was being stored by Citco at the Goldsbrough Mort wool stores near Wentworth Park, which was also their bond store.

While Citco wasn't too happy about the CCC displaying the SM, because their Citroen stand was to have the the new CX cutaway, especially sent from France, Ken Murden relented.

There was a couple of us that went to the bond store to clean and detail the SM, and there were hundreds of DS's on all the levels.

I took photos, but they didn't come out. It was pretty mind blowing and a site I will never forget.

You could tell the D Specials because of their white roofs.

Each floor had a mezzanine level, and Ken had imported some golf buggies (a bit rare at the time), that were stored there as well. Kids had broken into the bond store and some of the buggies had been driven off the mezzanine and onto the DS's below. There were quite a few damaged.

So my point about all this is, this was late 1975, and there were still hundred of unsold cars. There was a rush towards the end to buy a DS, so much so, that orders were filled by bring stock down from Maxim's in Queensland.

As the first CX's didn't arrive until late '76, there wasn't a long break between the DS & the CX.

    Best regards,

    Greg

    BTW,

Many of our D Specials were fitted with Weber Carby's. Those owners were the lucky ones :-))

when is the book coming out Greg? Pity about the photos. I can't believe kids trashed D's with golf carts ( well I can actually) northern beaches types? Bloody hilarious, I can see the short film version in my head right now. What were they drinking/on one wonders.

Interestingly my DSpecial is compliance "Citroen" 03/74, my 23 wagon is compliance "Citco" 12/74. Ironically my DSpecial now has a white roof and the wagon is all the one colour.... 😀

    Hi Guys,

The 12/74 was all about cars sold on or after that date, so your 03/74 D special was actually sold in March '74.

I think all Safari's were complianced 12 / 74, as they were a late shipment, and didn't comply with 1975 design rules.

    Best regards,

    Greg

If memory serves My DSp was in those sales ledgers the CCCNSW had. On the last page.... Sold to Strand Arcade Music shop for $7k.....!
Sadly don't know the history of my wagon. Just that it was one of a few the same spec and colour with consecutive numbers. 😀

That's interesting. My D Special has a compliance plate 6/74. From the VIN etc I estimate it was built in February '75. According to the original owner it was in a final shipment of Ds in May and sold to him by Duttons in Melbourne in August that year. At least I know the latter to be true, as I have the paperwork. The story I had heard was that compliance plates were back dated because of numerous changed regs, such as requirements for km/h speedometers (my car has mph). It has the Weber carburetor.

Just out of curiosity mine has a 3/74 compliance also, so sold in March 74, how does one find out whether it's a 73 or 74 model? I know the 74 models were produced from September 73 till August. I emailed the conservatoire once but no response. I have wanted to get the purple body plate made up again for that little finishing touch but but but..

Mine has 08FD1633 so does that mean August 1973 build?

Ken had a look at the sales records for me and no show : (
