    Default C5 2.7hdi 2009

    Hi all,
i noticed a fan belt type constant squeal that started intermittently then grew in sound and is now pretty much always there and loud. It goes away once your accelerating and mainly happens at idle.
im guessing it's a water pump cause I sprayed wd40 on the belts and there was no change(hope wd40 is ok but had to try that to eliminate the belt being the problem).

    my questions are:
    1. Is it dangerous to drive it like that IE will the timing belt destroy itself etc? Can I drive it noisy for a while?
    2. How much to change a new water pump?
    3. Is it best to do the whole lot while doing that job IE Timing belt, water pump, tensioners and anything else while it's all apart??......What would that cost?

    many thanks for info

The timing belt is due by 2018 at the latest anyway. I would replace water pump and idlers when belt is replaced. If the water pump seizes you will do massive damage to the engine - cam followers, maybe camshafts and valves so get the work done ASAP.

You will just have to get some quotes from Cit and Peugeot mechanics.

    Cheers, Ken

You could try your local ford and land rover dealers too ... the same engine is used in Territories and Discoveries.

It would be interesting to see how much the same belt kit is through Poogoe/Citroen/Land Rover/Ford.

Can you imagine the reaction if you turned up at most Aussie Ford dealers with a Citroen? {work of the devil, crap engines, bloody hydraulics, they're all built with left hand threads} etc etc etc....

    Then point at the engine.

    Hi Guys,

EAI is probably you best bet for the parts, they are in Sydney & Melbourne. The problem might just be the tensioner pulley on the serpentine belt. Take the belt off and see how well the tensioner turns. Think there is two rollers on the 2.7 HDI? If its not there then its probably in the timing belts (tensioner or water pump)

    Best regards,

    Greg

The SKF VKMA Kit available at EAI for about $450 contains the required belts and pulleys. Yes, you should do the water pump at the same time.

I have recently done mine in the 407HDi coupe.

Not sure how the engine is mounted in the C5, but the 407 has it across the car whereas the Territory and Land Rover is aligned with the fore and aft direction. Access is completely different.

Hi frednierck was your 407 done by a pug dealer or local guy, the reason i ask is my quote to do the job is $2,000.00. $1,600 labor and $400 for the kit which includes doing the water pump. If it was a local garage are you happy with the job and price?

Performed by my local mechanic with whom I have a long term business relationship. Has maintained the boss's Laser, Astina and 307 and my Magna over many years.

Job was done as part of the major service, but the line item says " Replace engine timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, replace injection pump belt and tensioner-9 years/180000 kms. $1020. The water pump had been replaced after an emergency failure up at Wipenna Pound in the Flinders Ranges.

Don't use any spray.......fix the cause of the squealing, not hide it, and belt dressing usually only makes the problem worse.

    Best regards,

I did mean as a short fix for a few days until your booked in to fix it.
