Icon4 Xantia HDI speed sensor-can I drive without one?

    Hi there-
I've been having intermittent issues with my speedo, and it finally stopped today. I've looked around a bit, and am pretty sure it's the speed sensor. I'll hopefully get the part within a few days, but I was wondering of it's ok to drive the car short term until I get it fitted?? It's a manual, so I'm pretty sure transmission will be fine, I just don't know if the speed sensor controls any other engine functions (apart from ABS possibly?) Any thoughts and wisdom would be much appreciated- as I don't want to damage anything.

There are posts here on Xantia speedos. They can fail, sometimes after going intermittently, because of four soldered joints on a circuit board - easy fix once the speedo is out (!). Others (not I) have done this and posted on the subject. It is the four larger ones that form a square/diamond in the inner part of the board - I presume it is repeated expansion/contraction normal to the plane of the circuit board, the joint cracks and it goes intermittent before failing completely.

I pulled one apart once, and the cracking where the wire came through the solder was quite visible.

    Cheers

Great, thanks heaps for the replies. If the new sensor doesn't work, the picture will definitely come in handy.

    Cheers
